We like our stories loud, messy, maybe even a little delusional 🤌🏽steeped in intensity, unforgettable, and just true enough to be dangerous… All under unforgiving lights.

On Saturday, that spirit was alive at the International Theatre Day festivities at the Uganda National Cultural Centre.

Thank you to the , and huge congratulations to all the storytellers who shone at the Uganda Theatre Excellence Awards.

Life is chaotic… theatre just makes it look intentional.

There are artists who make work, and there are artists who shift the emotional temperature of a room simply by entering it.

Esteri Tebandeke was the latter.

A filmmaker, actress, dancer, and visual artist whose presence expanded what was possible for Ugandan and African storytelling, she moved through the world with a rare blend of discipline, intuition, and emotional truth.

From Queen of Katwe to Her Broken Shadow, from the stages of Kampala to global festivals, Esteri carried stories with a depth that could only be lived not taught.

She was a graduate of Makerere University’s Margaret Trowell School of Industrial and Fine Art, and her work reflected that trained eye: textured, intentional, and rooted in the body.

But beyond the roles and accolades, Esteri was a creative spirit who recognized other creative spirits.
She saw people clearly.
She connected with generosity.
She built community with sincerity.
And she championed women’s voices through the Binti Film Festival, ensuring that the next generation of storytellers would rise with more support than she had.

At 2Sistars Media, we honor her not only for the work she made, but for the world she helped shape … a world where African stories are told with dignity, courage, and emotional resonance.

Esteri’s legacy is not just in the films she left behind.
It lives in the artists she inspired, the stories she elevated, and the creative ecosystems she nurtured.

Rest in power, our Esteri.🕊️
