[ZAWIA is also a historical building typology from the Arab Islamic era, originally referring to a corner used for gathering and general education in small mosques with no minaret or ‘minbar’. The act of ZAWIA, in Arabic (inzewa’), refers to the action of gathering and grouping of people in a learning circle.]
