How I Gave Madonna's "Ray of Light" a Club-Ready Refresh

Remixing is like being a musical architect.

You’re given a legendary blueprint and your job is to build a new structure that feels both fresh and familiar. I recently took on this challenge with Madonna’s "Ray of Light," transforming its high-energy sound into a bright, uplifting tech house groove perfect for the dancefloor. Here’s a look at my process.

Step 1: Breaking Down the Original

My first task was to dig into the original stems. I focused on chopping Madonna's voice—the heart of the track. My goal was to preserve its energy but frame it within a completely new, tech-driven context.

Step 2: Building an Uplifting Foundation

I knew the drums had to make people feel good. I built a solid, four-on-the-floor kick drum but focused on making the overall rhythm feel uplifting and happy, perfect for a club but not too aggressive. I layered in sharp hi-hats and percussive elements to create a groove that was both energetic and smooth.

Step 3: Adding Character and Brightness

Instead of using spacey pads, I kept the sound clean and techy. The key elements that brought the track to life were:

A catchy arpeggio from the stems: This provided the main hook and gave the track its forward-driving vibe.

Guitar elements from the stems: I added these to bring a touch of sweetness and warmth, balancing the techy feel.

Step 4: Making It My Own

The most creative part was working with the vocal. I chopped bits and pieces to create catchy rhythmic phrases, playing with a "catch and release" effect that worked perfectly with the groove. This added surprise when I tested it out and kept the energy flowing on the dancefloor.

Step 5: Structuring the Journey

Arrangement was key. I focused on a structure that slowly built energy, let the arp and guitars shine, and featured the chopped vocals in a way that felt both new and recognizable.

Instead of calling this July’s “dump,” I’d rather celebrate these moments for what they truly meant: genuine happiness—playing and listening to incredible music, whether or not the tracks are big hits or rare finds. The beauty comes from sounds that aren’t everywhere, and they don’t need to be overly complex to make an impact.

This month, finally catching Youngr live—a long-time dream for me—was a real highlight. Huge respect to "People & Places" that got bold with their bookings, inviting fresh artists instead of sticking with the familiar. Special shoutout to Gawdat and Del Rady, whose sets kept the night flowing with their well curated track selection & own productions that easily stood alongside the best I hear from top international labels.

Other highlights this month stand out just as vividly: performing at a slot where the only thing that mattered was the music and the dancefloor—no phones, no distractions. The crowd was truly there to dance, living in the moment like the old-school raves, showing their appreciation for a perfect break with cheers and whistles rather than stories and selfies.

These experiences are what set the spirit of a real event apart. When everyone lets go and truly connects, the energy is something special—and that’s exactly what I was privileged to be a part of this July.
