but it’s not easy to balance product development and pitching, let alone add branding to the mix …
ME: It’s not easy but it’ll make product development, pitching and marketing easier

FOUNDER: Really?! How?
ME: Remember these 5 things. And do No.1 first:

1. Know thyself
2. Be different
3. It takes a team
4. Listen to your customers
5. Keep growing

1. Know thyself
Your purpose serves as a North Star
Build a solid brand foundation first:
• Brand purpose — why are you here?
• Brand mission — what are you trying to achieve?
• Brand personality — what are your values, tone of voice and look & feel?

2. Be different
Be the only one in your category
Find it and own it:
i) Write down all the possible ways your brand is unique
ii) Put them in this statement: “Our [offering] is the ONLY [category] that [benefit].”
iii) Ask: Is it true?
iv) Ask: Is it compelling enough?

3. It takes a team
Everyone in the company must live the brand
Build a culture so that everyone embodies what your brand stands for

4. Listen to your customers
Your customers want to be the heroes of their own journey
Listen, then empower them and your brand will thrive

Like a person, your brand will grow and evolve

Everything begins with trust!
From friendship, to marriage, to legislation.
And the same’s true for brand building…

With trust, your customers will buy from you,
refer you and even support you.

But how do you build trust?

There are 4 building blocks of trust:

1. Clarity
2. Competency
3. Authenticity
4. Empathy

1. Clarity
Do you know what your brand stands for?
E.g. Brand purpose, values, personality, etc.

2. Competency
Can your brand deliver what it promises?
E.g. Product, brand promise, value prop., etc.

3. Authenticity

Does your brand behave consistently?
E.g. Brand identity, marketing messages, social media, advocacy, culture, etc.

4. Empathy
Does your brand care about your customer and their success?
E.g. Customer service, community, brand experience, etc.

Examine each of them,
and see if your brand needs to work on any of these.
