Meet Super Eagles New Star Boy, Azeez who Scored Twice on his Debut to Qualify the Team to The Unity Cup Final.

BY: AMADI Chijioke Divine ( Classic Dj Dica Divine )

From rejection to revelation, Femi Azeez, has completed one of football’s most inspiring rise to stardom stories. Released by Watford as a teenager and forced to grind through England’s unforgiving non league system, the Nigerian winger refused to let his dream die. Years later, the Millwall star is now the newest sensation in African football after exploding onto the international scene with a stunning two goal performance on his Super Eagles debut at the Unity Cup.

The 24 year old attacker wasted no time announcing himself to Nigerian fans, scoring twice in a dominant 2-0 victory over Zimbabwe to instantly become the face of the tournament. His fearless dribbling, explosive pace, and direct attacking style brought fresh energy to the Super Eagles attack, with supporters already hailing him as one of the national team’s brightest new stars. It was the perfect introduction to international football and a statement performance that immediately justified Coach Eric Chelle’s faith in him.

Azeez’s journey to this moment has been built on resilience and persistence. After being shown the exit door at Watford’s academy at just 14, he rebuilt his career step by step with spells at Northwood, Wealdstone, and Hanwell Town before finally earning his breakthrough at Reading.
His career reached another level at Millwall during the 2025/2026 Championship season, where he delivered 11 goals, seven assists, Team of the Season recognition, and the Championship Player of the Month award in February.

Interestingly, football talent runs in the family, with Femi also being the older brother of former Arsenal academy midfielder Miguel Azeez. But while his younger brother was once considered the more famous prospect, Femi is now stealing the spotlight after years of battling setbacks and proving doubters wrong. From non league football to becoming Nigeria’s newest hero, Azeez’s incredible rise is quickly becoming one of the most exciting stories in African football.

The Super Eagles will face the winner between Jamaica and India in the final.

NWFL PRESS RELEASE

Port Harcourt Gets Nod for Historic 2026 NWFL Premiership Super Six

The Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) has officially announced Port Harcourt, Rivers State capital, as the host city for the 2026 NWFL Premiership Super Six Finals, marking the first time ever the six-team season-ending playoffs will be staged in the Garden City.

The title-deciding championship is scheduled to hold from Friday, June 5 to Sunday, June 14, 2026, bringing together Nigeria’s top six women’s football clubs for the climax of the 2025/2026 NWFL Premiership season.

Speaking on the choice of host city, NWFL Chief Operating Officer, Ms. Modupe Shabi, said: “On behalf of the management of the NWFL, we are delighted to announce Port Harcourt, Rivers State, as host of the 2026 NWFL Premiership Super Six Finals.

“The Rivers State Government has consistently demonstrated strong support for women’s football and successfully hosted our Annual General Assembly last October. We are excited to return with our flagship competition as part of our commitment to expanding elite women’s football across Nigeria.”

The country’s top-flight women’s football competition will feature the top three teams from Group A and Group B of the regular season competing in a round-robin format, with each club playing five matches over nine days.

Qualified teams for the 2026 NWFL Premiership Super Six include title-holders Bayelsa Queens, Edo Queens, Rivers Angels, Robo Queens, Nasarawa Amazons, and debutants Abia Angels.

The NWFL Premiership has produced different champions across the last five editions - Rivers Angels (2021), title holders Bayelsa Queens (2022 and 2025), Delta Queens (2023), and Edo Queens (2024), setting the stage for another fiercely contested title race.

Continuing, Shabi emphasized the importance of compliance and professionalism from participating clubs ahead of the championship tournament.

“The Super Six remains the pinnacle of the NWFL Premiership season, and we are confident the fans in Rivers State will create another memorable atmosphere for players, officials, partners, and supporters.

“We also urge all qualified clubs to adhere strictly to all competition regulations, schedules, and directives that will be communicated subsequently by the League. Once again, congratulations to the participating teams, and we wish them a successful outing at the Super Six.”

The Super Six will once again determine Nigeria’s league champions as well as the country’s representative at the WAFU-B qualifiers for a place in the 2026 CAF Women’s Champions League, and ultimately, the 2027 FIFA Women’s Club Championship.
