Katsina United has clarified the circumstances surrounding the tragic death of its player, Chinedu Ozor, who collapsed during a friendly match against Niger Tornadoes at the Muhammad Dikko Stadium in Katsina.
In a heartfelt statement issued by the club’s Media Directorate, Katsina United confirmed that Ozor passed away despite efforts to save his life.
The club also dismissed reports circulating on social media that the player later regained consciousness or “came back to life,” describing the reports as untrue.
“We have seen reports claiming that Chinedu later regained consciousness or ‘came back to life.’ We understand that people desperately wanted this to be true. We all did. But sadly, those reports are not true,” the club stated.
According to Katsina United, Ozor never regained consciousness after the incident.
“He did not regain consciousness. He passed away,” the statement added.
The club explained that, in the heartbreaking moments following the incident, Ozor’s family, overwhelmed by shock and refusing to give up hope, requested further medical confirmation before his body was taken to the morgue.
The club urged the public to stop spreading rumours and unverified information concerning the player’s death.
“So please, we ask from the bottom of our hearts: stop the rumours. Stop the false reports. Stop sharing unverified information,” Katsina United appealed.
The club also highlighted the pain being experienced by Ozor’s family, teammates and friends, stressing that “behind every post, every headline and every video is a grieving family.”
Katsina United called for compassion and respect as those close to the player mourn his passing.
“At this moment, what his family needs is compassion, not speculation. What his teammates need is space to grieve. And what Chinedu deserves is to be remembered with dignity,” the statement said.
The club concluded by praying for strength for Ozor’s family and for the late player’s soul to “rest in perfect peace.”
