“Don’t gatekeep”. I can’t help but wonder… at what cost?
We’ve reached a point where a single viral post can completely change a place.
A quiet residential street becomes a content backdrop. A family’s backyard suddenly has strangers walking through it every day. A hidden swimming spot is left covered in trash. A small town sees housing prices skyrocket because everyone suddenly wants to move there after seeing it online.
This isn’t hypothetical. It’s happening all over the world. Places like Guatemala, Mexico, Bali, Portugal, and countless other destinations have seen neighborhoods transform almost overnight. Increased tourism can absolutely benefit local economies, but when popularity outpaces infrastructure, or when outside investors buy up homes and short-term rentals replace local housing, the people who built those communities often end up paying the highest price.
Then there’s the smaller issue that rarely gets talked about. Creators geotagging residential areas, private paths, neighborhood overlooks, or spots that were never designed for thousands of visitors. What was once a peaceful place for the people who live there suddenly becomes a daily photoshoot location. More noise, more litter. More people ignoring private property signs because they saw someone on TikTok standing there.
Sometimes the most responsible thing a creator can do is keep the exact location to themselves. Because once millions of people know about it, it’s no longer hidden. And the people who call it home are often the ones left dealing with the consequences.
