Connecting Sand-shift Desert Roads in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia Based on Satellite Imagery

Abstract:
In this paper, we present a graph-based framework for predicting sand-shift road segments and connections between them from high-resolution satellite imagery. The framework uses a graphtheoretic framework wherein the nodes are points on existing sand-shift roads. Two “adjacent” nodes have an edge joining them if there exists a sand-shift road segment connecting them. The attributes of the nodes can be road-types (as determined by Open- StreetMap (OSM)), speed limits (as available from the Saudi Arabian government). A graph-embedding based approach is used to predict new sand-shift road segments as well as connections between them.

This paper presents a new method to extract meaningful local features from a complete set of Circular and elliptical symmetrical structures (CCES). The proposed approach is motivated by the success of previously achieved CE-LBP descriptors on texture and age classification. These descriptors and its variants are directly derived from the average function, which combines the elliptical and circular pixels into one, thus they represent the partial structures of the circular and elliptical window. This paper proved that this leads to the loss of local structural information by reducing the overall complexity. This paper improves the efficiency of these existing approaches by deriving the ternary relationship among the symmetrical pixels versus the center pixel of the CCES. To reduce the complexity and retain the significant local structural features the CCES is segmented into horizontal and vertical structures. The histogram and GLCM features derived on this represent the texture features on CCES. The state-of-the-art approaches on Elliptical & Circular neighborhoods are compared with the proposed method using the benchmark facial databases and the results suggest the potentiality of the proposed descriptor.
