One of the most characteristic features of the ecclesiastical establishment during the Middle Ages was its strong internal hierarchy, while at the same time there were different channels of mobility for advancement and promotion within that hierarchy. The aim of this monographic dossier is to study the social background of the clergy who were members of these councils in the different Spanish kingdoms during the late Middle Ages, their patronage networks, channels of promotion and mobility, and to analyse the benefits derived from their integration into the capitular institution. Based on all of this, this topic offers a wide range of possibilities: analysis of one or more families that control access to positions within a chapter, as well as the economy and ecclesiastical income; the control of local oligarchies over chapters and the links between the clergy and urban factions and conflicts; the integration of families of Jewish-convert origin into them; the systems of election and access to cathedral positions; the study of clientelistic relationships and their links to ecclesiastical promotion processes; and the relationship between council members and episcopal and cardinal families and curias.
The study of these issues in cathedral chapters from different Spanish kingdoms (Portugal, Castile, Navarre, and Aragon) over a broad chronological period can provide an appropriate and enriching comparative perspective, which is one of the fundamental objectives of this proposed monographic analysis.
