85 people are being investigated for being part of a network that had been stealing suitcases in South Tenerife for years.
In the latest operation, the Guardia Civil arrested 30 people and investigated another 21 for crimes of belonging to a criminal group that stole from the luggage of passengers travelling at Tenerife South Airport. They are accused of belonging to a criminal group, burglary, criminal damage, receiving stolen goods, and money laundering.
At the end of 2023, the Guardia Civil carried out Operation Oretel, launched after detecting an increase in the number of complaints filed by travellers due to thefts and pilferage from their checked luggage. The direct victims were passengers of various nationalities. During the operation, 14 airport employees were arrested, another 20 were investigated, and stolen items valued at more than €2 million were recovered.
The 2023 operation has led to the current investigation. Through this officers discovered that some of the accused had been selling gold, watches, and precious objects stolen from luggage to a jewellry store in Santa Cruz for years. They conducted an inspection yesterday, during which they seized pieces of jewelry valued at more than €59,000.
