Built by Queen‐consort Rudabai on the old caravan route to Patan, this five-storey stepwell tames Gujarat’s fierce summer with passive cooling, stone lattices and a shaft that drops to the water table. Jain lotuses, Hindu apsaras and Islamic arabesques share the same sandstone columns; proof that water once united faiths as surely as it quenched thirst. Upper galleries doubled as a shaded salon for women; a sloped platform still hints at the trough (havado) where traders’ cattle drank.

Architectural harmony, cultural fusion, hydraulic ingenuity-Rudabai Vav distils them all into one subterranean corridor of light and shadow.
