YOU DON'T HAVE TO CHOOSE BETWEEN HIGH-TECH EDUCATION AND A REALISTIC STUDENT BUDGET

THINK STUDYING ENGINEERING OR COMPUTER SCIENCE IN EUROPE HAS TO COST A FORTUNE?
Think again.
When Filipino students imagine studying technology or engineering in Europe, the first destinations that often come to mind are:
London.
Paris.
Madrid.
Amsterdam.
Berlin.
These are excellent places to study.
But they are not the only places worth researching.
Across Central Europe, universities are investing in research, laboratories, technology, engineering, computer science and applied sciences, while living costs can be lower than in many Western European destinations.
In March 2026, the European Education Area specifically highlighted Central Europe as an increasingly interesting option for international students interested in high-tech studies. The European Commission pointed to modern university facilities, research investment, technology partnerships and comparatively lower living costs as some of the region's advantages.
And this matters because choosing a university is not simply about asking:
“Which country has the most famous universities?”
A better question might be:
“Where can I get strong STEM education, practical experience, international exposure and a budget I can realistically manage?”
Let's break it down:
1️⃣ EUROPE'S TECH SECTOR NEEDS PEOPLE WITH DIGITAL SKILLS
► Technology is no longer a small corner of the European economy.
It is becoming part of almost every industry.
Software.
Artificial intelligence.
Cybersecurity.
Robotics.
Data science.
Engineering.
Renewable energy.
Advanced manufacturing.
Automotive technology.
Digital infrastructure.
Biotechnology.
According to Eurostat, more than 10.4 million people were working as ICT specialists across the European Union in 2025.
That represented 5% of total employment in the EU.
Even more interestingly, the number of ICT specialists increased by almost 60% between 2015 and 2025, significantly faster than overall employment growth.
The European Union is also targeting at least 20 million ICT specialists by 2030.
So when you study computer science, information technology, engineering or another technology-related field, you're not studying in isolation.
You're entering an academic environment connected to a wider European technology ecosystem.
Of course, studying a STEM degree does not guarantee employment.
But it does mean you're building skills in fields that are increasingly important across European economies.
2️⃣ CENTRAL EUROPE IS WORTH PUTTING ON YOUR MAP
► If you have only been searching for universities in Spain, France, Germany or the Netherlands, your shortlist might be much smaller than it needs to be.
Look at Central Europe.
Countries such as:
Czechia.
Poland.
Hungary.
Slovenia.
Slovakia.
Austria.
Each country has a different education system, tuition structure, language environment, visa process and cost of living.
But they share something important.
They are connected to Europe's wider academic, research and industrial networks.
The European Commission's 2026 overview specifically highlights Central Europe for students interested in engineering, computer science, technology and applied sciences.
The reason is not simply “cheap education.”
It is the combination of:
Research.
Modern facilities.
Technology.
Industry connections.
Practical learning.
And potentially more manageable living costs.
That combination deserves attention from international students.
3️⃣ YOU CAN FIND ENGLISH-TAUGHT STEM PROGRAMMES
► One concern Filipino students may have is:
“But I don't speak Czech.”
Or:
“I don't speak Polish.”
Or:
“I don't speak Hungarian.”
That does not automatically mean you cannot study there.
English-taught programmes are available across Central Europe.
For example, the official Study in Hungary database lists more than 700 programmes in English and other foreign languages.
Hungary also has English-taught programmes in areas such as:
Computer science.
Engineering.
Materials science.
Mechanical engineering.
Environmental engineering.
Agricultural engineering.
Information technology.
At Budapest University of Technology and Economics, international students can find programmes across engineering, computer science, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, chemical technology and related fields, with programmes available in English. The university also participates in the EELISA European University Alliance.
In Czechia, the official Study in Czechia database includes English-taught computer science programmes, including bachelor's and master's programmes at Charles University.
Poland also has English-taught computer science and engineering programmes.
For example, the International Faculty of Engineering at Lodz University of Technology offers an English-taught Computer Science programme that includes programming, software engineering, databases, computer networks and data processing. Students also complete a mobility semester at a foreign university.
So don't assume:
“Central Europe means I have to study in the local language.”
Instead ask:
“Which programmes are officially taught in English?”
4️⃣ HERE ARE SOME COUNTRIES YOU SHOULD ACTUALLY RESEARCH
► Let's make this practical.
If you're interested in STEM, here are several Central European destinations worth adding to your university search.
CZECHIA
Czechia combines established universities with strong technical and research traditions.
Prague and Brno are obvious places to investigate, but don't limit yourself to city reputation alone.
The official Study in Czechia portal currently lists English-taught programmes in areas such as computer science and computational linguistics.
For example, Charles University's English-taught Computer Science bachelor's programme is three years, while its Computer Science, Language Technologies and Computational Linguistics master's programme focuses on areas including machine learning, natural language processing and software development.
For living costs, Study in Czechia estimates that students generally need around €500 to €750 per month, depending heavily on location and lifestyle. Prague and Brno tend to be more expensive than smaller cities.
POLAND
► Poland is another country Filipino students should not overlook.
Its major academic cities include:
Warsaw.
Krakow.
Wroclaw.
Gdansk.
Poznan.
Lodz.
Katowice.
The official Study in Poland portal says student living costs can start around 1,500 PLN, or approximately €330, per month, with typical estimated expenses around 1,500 to 2,000 PLN, or roughly €330 to €430, depending on lifestyle and location.
And Poland has English-taught programmes in computer science, engineering and other technical fields.
That means you can potentially combine an international academic environment with a cost structure that may be more manageable than some of Europe's most expensive student destinations.
HUNGARY
► Hungary is particularly interesting if you're looking at engineering, computer science and applied sciences.
The official Study in Hungary portal lists more than 700 programmes in foreign languages.
Budapest University of Technology and Economics offers programmes across computer science, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, chemical technology, natural sciences and transportation engineering.
Hungary also has a substantial research ecosystem.
The official Study in Hungary portal reports more than 150 university research groups working across different scientific fields.
And at Széchenyi István University, students can find English-taught programmes across engineering, informatics and other fields, with links to practical innovation projects such as autonomous and electric vehicle research and testing.
SLOVENIA
► Slovenia is smaller, but that doesn't mean it should disappear from your search.
Its official Study in Slovenia portal lists English-taught programmes, including computer science and bioinformatics.
The country also offers both academically oriented and professionally oriented higher education pathways.
If you're looking for a smaller European environment rather than a huge capital city, Slovenia can be an interesting country to investigate.
SLOVAKIA
► Slovakia is another destination that deserves more attention.
The Slovak Ministry of Education describes the country as offering a range of bachelor's, master's and doctoral programmes, with many available in English and other foreign languages.
The country's higher education system follows the European Bologna structure and uses ECTS credits.
Official Study in Slovakia information also highlights technical and IT programmes taught in English.
Mechanical engineering, civil engineering, electrical engineering and other technical fields are among the areas available to international students.
AUSTRIA
► Austria is slightly different.
It can be more expensive than some other Central European destinations, especially in larger cities.
But it has a strong technical and applied education sector.
The official Study in Austria portal currently lists around 580 programmes taught in English across Austrian higher education institutions.
Its Universities of Applied Sciences are particularly interesting for students who want career-oriented education.
These institutions include mandatory practical training or job-based internships in their curricula.
Across Austria, Universities of Applied Sciences currently offer around 640 degree programmes, including engineering and IT, with around 80 programmes taught entirely in English.
So Austria may not always be the cheapest option.
But it can be a strong example of why students should compare the entire education experience, not just monthly rent.
5️⃣ DON'T LOOK AT TUITION WITHOUT LOOKING AT LIVING COSTS
► This is where many study abroad comparisons go wrong.
A university might have lower tuition.
But if rent is extremely high, your overall budget may still be expensive.
Another university might have somewhat higher tuition.
But if accommodation, transportation and food are more manageable, the total annual cost could be competitive.
Think about your budget as:
Tuition

Food
+
Transportation
+
Health insurance
+
Visa and residence costs

Study materials

Personal expenses
+
Emergency savings
For example, Study in Czechia estimates student living expenses at around €500 to €750 per month.
Study in Poland gives an estimated average of around €330 to €430 per month for typical student expenses.
Austria, on the other hand, currently estimates average student living costs at around €1,300 per month, with accommodation alone estimated at approximately €450 to €700.
This is why saying:
“Central Europe is cheap.”
is too simplistic.
The better question is:
“What is the total cost of this specific university and city for me?”
6️⃣ HIGH-TECH DOESN'T HAVE TO MEAN ONLY THEORETICAL LEARNING
► Another thing to investigate is how much practical experience is built into the degree.
For STEM students, ask:
Does the programme include laboratory work?
Are there research projects?
Does the university work with companies?
Are internships part of the curriculum?
Can students participate in industry projects?
Are there innovation or entrepreneurship programmes?
Can students access research facilities?
Does the university have technology partnerships?
This can make a huge difference.
The European Commission specifically points to research facilities, laboratories and industry partnerships as important features of Central European high-tech education.
And you can see examples of this approach across the region.
In Austria, Universities of Applied Sciences emphasise practical training and job-based internships.
In Hungary, Széchenyi István University's ZalaZONE facility supports real-world testing involving autonomous and electric vehicles.
In Slovakia, technical faculties highlight connections between research, practical education and industry.
The point is simple:
Don't just ask what subjects you will study.
Ask what you will actually do.
7️⃣ YOUR UNIVERSITY'S INDUSTRY CONNECTIONS CAN MATTER FOR YOUR CAREER
► Imagine two students.
Both graduate with Computer Science degrees.
Student A spent three years attending lectures, completing exams and submitting assignments.
Student B did those things too.
But Student B also:
Worked on a research project.
Completed an internship.
Built a software project.
Joined an international student team.
Attended industry events.
Worked with professors involved in research.
Built connections with students from other countries.
Both have degrees.
But their experiences are different.
This is why internships, industry projects and practical learning should be part of your university research.

For an international student hoping to build a career in Europe, those experiences can become valuable parts of your professional profile.
Again, nothing is guaranteed.
But you can choose a programme that gives you more opportunities to build that experience.
8️⃣ DON'T CHOOSE A UNIVERSITY ONLY BECAUSE IT IS HIGHER IN A RANKING
► Rankings can be useful.
But they shouldn't be the entire decision.
Especially for international students.
Instead of asking only:
“What is this university's ranking?”
Create a bigger checklist.
ACADEMIC QUALITY
What subjects are strong?
Who teaches the programme?
What research is being done?
PRACTICAL EXPERIENCE
Are internships available?
Are there laboratories?
Are there industry projects?
INTERNATIONAL EXPERIENCE
Are there Erasmus+ opportunities?
Does the university have international partners?
Can you study abroad?
CAREER SUPPORT
Does the university have career services?
Does it connect students with companies?
Are there career fairs?
Are internships common?
COST
What is the tuition?
What is the actual monthly cost of living?
How expensive is accommodation?
LOCATION
Is the city affordable?
Is public transportation good?
Is it a technology or industrial hub?
LANGUAGE
Is the degree completely taught in English?
Will local-language skills help with internships or employment?
VISA AND WORK RULES
What are the student residence requirements?
Can international students work?
What restrictions apply?
This gives you a much more realistic picture.
9️⃣ THINK BEYOND COMPUTER SCIENCE
► STEM is much bigger than coding.
If you're interested in technology, don't limit your search to:
Computer Science.
You could also investigate:
Artificial Intelligence.
Data Science.
Cybersecurity.
Software Engineering.
Electrical Engineering.
Mechanical Engineering.
Robotics.
Mechatronics.
Industrial Engineering.
Automotive Engineering.
Environmental Engineering.
Energy Systems.
Materials Science.
Biotechnology.
Applied Mathematics.
Information Systems.
Telecommunications.
Aerospace Engineering.
For example, Hungarian universities list English-taught programmes in materials engineering, mechanical engineering, environmental engineering, agricultural engineering and computer science.
Slovakia has English-taught mechanical and civil engineering programmes.
Slovenia has English-taught computer science and bioinformatics options.
Austria has English-taught programmes across technology and applied sciences.
The more specific your interests become, the more likely you are to discover a university that fits you better than the obvious choices.

► If you're a Filipino student planning to study engineering, computer science or another STEM field in Europe, try this.
Don't start with:
“Which country is most famous?”
Start with:
“What do I want to study?”
Then:
“Which European universities are strong in this field?”
Then:
“Which programmes are taught in English?”
Then:
“Which cities can I realistically afford?”
Then:
“Which universities have strong research and industry connections?”
Then:
“Where can I get internship or mobility opportunities?”
Then:
“What are the student visa and residence requirements?”
Then:
“What would my total yearly budget actually be?”
And finally:
“Where would I have the best combination of education, experience, affordability and career opportunity?”
That approach can completely change your university shortlist.
A student interested in AI might discover an English-taught programme in Czechia.
An engineering student might find a strong technical programme in Poland.
A computer science student might discover Hungary.
Someone interested in applied technology might explore Austria.
Another student might find an engineering programme in Slovakia or a computer science pathway in Slovenia.
The point is not that one country is automatically better.
The point is that Europe has more options than the destinations we hear about most often.

Studying engineering, computer science, artificial intelligence or another STEM field in Europe does not automatically mean choosing the most expensive city you can find.
Central Europe is becoming increasingly interesting for international students because universities are investing in research, laboratories, technology and industry connections, while some destinations can offer more manageable living costs than major Western European cities.
And this is where Filipino students have an opportunity.
Don't only search:
London.
Paris.
Madrid.
Amsterdam.
Search:
Prague.
Brno.
Warsaw.
Krakow.
Lodz.
Budapest.
Gyor.
Ljubljana.
Bratislava.
Vienna.
Look beyond the postcard.
Look at the programme.
Look at the laboratory.
Look at the internship.
Look at the industry connection.
Look at the city.
Look at the total cost.
Look at the visa requirements.
Look at where the degree could take you.
Because the smartest study abroad decision isn't necessarily:
“The university with the biggest name.”
It could be:
“The university where I can build the skills, experience, network and international career I actually want.”
And sometimes, that university is in a country you never considered before.
