🐾 Today, on International Lynx Day, we celebrate some of the most remarkable wild cats on Earth.

There are four lynx species worldwide: the Bobcat, the Canadian Lynx, the Eurasian Lynx and the Iberian Lynx. Together, they inhabit an extraordinary range of landscapes, from the boreal forests of North America and Eurasia to the Mediterranean scrublands of the Iberian Peninsula.

Elusive, adaptable and highly efficient predators, lynxes are perfectly equipped for life as hunters. Their keen senses, powerful limbs and remarkable agility allow them to thrive in environments ranging from snowy northern forests to dry Mediterranean ecosystems.

Among them, the Iberian Lynx stands as one of the great conservation success stories of our time. Once the world's most endangered feline, with fewer than 100 individuals remaining in 2002, the species has recovered to more than 2,000 wild individuals thanks to decades of dedicated conservation work.

Endemic to the Iberian Peninsula, the Iberian Lynx has become a symbol of resilience and of what can be achieved when science, conservation and long-term commitment come together.

At Lynx Nature Books, we are proud to share our name with one of Europe's most iconic mammals and to celebrate the wildlife that inspires our work every day.

Special thanks to wildlife photographer Marco Ansón (.anson.79) for the stunning photographs featured in this post.

🌊 Today, on World Oceans Day, we reflect on the vast blue world that defines our planet.

More than 70% of Earth's surface is covered by oceans, and the oceans harbour a vast proportion of the planet's biodiversity. Life itself emerged from ancient seas, and even today the health of our planet remains inseparable from the health of the oceans.

Despite this, we often overlook just how much of Earth's biodiversity is tied to the sea.

From coral reefs and abyssal plains to polar seas and the open ocean, marine ecosystems are among the most remarkable and beautiful environments on the planet. They sustain global climate systems, contribute significantly to the planet's oxygen cycle, and support an immense web of life.

One of the ocean's most iconic inhabitants is the Narwhal, the often called "unicorn of the sea" that inhabits the icy waters of the Arctic. Its distinctive spiral tusk, which can grow to around 3 metres long, is in fact a highly sensitive sensory organ capable of detecting subtle changes in the surrounding environment.

Narwhals are also highly accomplished divers, descending more than 1,500 metres into dark Arctic waters to hunt fish and squid using powerful suction feeding. But like so many marine species, they face growing threats from climate change, pollution, underwater noise, and the rapid warming of the Arctic and the resulting transformation of its ecosystems.

Protecting the oceans means safeguarding the largest living system on Earth and the countless species that depend on it, from the smallest plankton to the largest whales.

🌍🐦 Today, on World Swift Day, we celebrate one of the most extraordinary groups of birds on Earth.

Built for life in the air, swifts spend the vast majority of their lives on the wing. They feed, drink, sleep, and even mate in flight, with some species remaining almost continuously airborne for months at a time.

Masters of speed, endurance and agility, swifts undertake remarkable migrations that span continents and oceans. Their streamlined bodies and long, scythe-shaped wings make them among the most specialised aerial birds on the planet.

For many people, the arrival of swifts is also one of the defining signs of spring and summer. Their unmistakable screaming calls and high-speed chases through evening skies are a seasonal spectacle across towns and cities throughout much of their range.

Perfectly adapted to a life spent almost entirely in the air, swifts are a remarkable example of the power of evolution.

🐦 Aves nacidas para el cielo.
🐦 Ocells nascuts per al cel.

On World Environment Day, we are reminded that protecting the natural world begins with recognizing just how extraordinary it truly is.

Some places on Earth hold a staggering concentration of life within relatively small areas. Countries like Colombia, Indonesia, and Papua New Guinea are among the world’s megadiverse nations, home to immense numbers of species and ecosystems found nowhere else on the planet.

These regions should inspire awe and pride in the richness of life our planet has produced. Yet they also face enormous environmental pressures, from habitat loss and deforestation to weak environmental protections and unsustainable development.

What is at stake is not only the survival of individual species, but entire ecological communities, evolutionary histories, and some of the most remarkable concentrations of biodiversity on Earth.

At Lynx Nature Books, biodiversity has always been at the heart of what we do. Through field guides, reference works, and illustrated natural history books, we aim to support the understanding and appreciation that conservation depends on.

Works like Birds of Colombia, Birds of the Indonesian Archipelago, and Birds of New Guinea celebrate and record for posterity some of the richest avifaunas on Earth, reminders of how much there is to protect.🐾

Because protecting the environment begins with understanding the life it sustains.

🦜 Today, on World Parrot Day, we celebrate one of the most intelligent, charismatic, and colourful groups of birds on Earth.

Parrots are far more than bright feathers and familiar voices. With large brains relative to their body size, they rank among the most cognitively advanced birds, capable of problem-solving, tool use, and even understanding aspects of human language. Their remarkable ability to mimic speech reflects a deeper intelligence built on social connection and learning.

Across more than 400 species, parrots occupy an extraordinary range of forms and habitats, from the blue-and-gold macaws of South American rainforests to alpine keas, desert parakeets, and the iconic African Grey. Today, their adaptability is also visible in unexpected places, with introduced populations such as ring-necked parakeets now thriving in cities like London and across parts of Spain.

For thousands of years, humans have been drawn to parrots. From ancient cultures that revered them for their colour and symbolism to modern homes where they are cherished companions, parrots have long held a special place in human society. Perhaps it is no coincidence that highly intelligent, social species like ourselves feel such a strong connection to other intelligent, communicative beings.

Yet this connection comes with responsibility. Many parrot species are now under threat from habitat loss, trapping, and the illegal wildlife trade, putting increasing pressure on populations worldwide.

World Parrot Day is a reminder of both their brilliance and their vulnerability, and of the need to protect the ecosystems they depend on.

Because these voices of the wild deserve to be heard for generations to come.

Birds of the Mesozoic: An Illustrated Field Guide, a journey back to the origins of modern birds and their dinosaur ancestors 🦖🐦

Long before today’s birds filled our skies, their ancestors were already evolving, experimenting, and diversifying during the Age of Dinosaurs. This beautifully illustrated guide brings that lost world to life, revealing how birds emerged from feathered, meat-eating dinosaurs and became one of the most successful groups on Earth.

✓ Covers more than 200 species from the Jurassic and Cretaceous
✓ Over 250 full-colour illustrations reconstructing ancient birds and their relatives
✓ Detailed species accounts including size, habitat, age, and key features
✓ Explores the evolution of feathers, flight, and early avian diversity
✓ Introduction to skeletal anatomy and modern paleontological methods

From iconic species like Archaeopteryx to a wide array of early avian forms, this book shows that birds are not just descended from dinosaurs, they are living dinosaurs. It captures a time of incredible evolutionary experimentation, when early birds explored different ways of flying, feeding, and surviving in prehistoric ecosystems.

Written by paleontologist Juan Benito and illustrated by Roc Olivé, this guide is an essential read for anyone interested in birds, evolution, and the deep history of life on Earth.

Because understanding birds today means understanding where they came from.

🦦 Today, on World Otter Day, we celebrate one of the most charismatic and intelligent families of mammals, starting with a true icon of South America’s rivers: the giant river otter.

Sleek, social, and unmistakably vocal, giant river otters are the largest otters in the world, perfectly adapted to life in the water. With webbed feet, dense waterproof fur, and streamlined bodies, they move effortlessly through rivers and wetlands, where they reign as apex predators.

But what truly sets them apart is their social life. Living in close-knit family groups of up to 20 individuals, they hunt cooperatively, communicate through a rich repertoire of calls, and raise their young together. These bonds are so strong that groups will even defend themselves against predators like jaguars, using coordination and numbers to drive them away.

Their presence is a sign of a healthy ecosystem, helping to regulate fish populations and maintain balance in freshwater habitats. Yet despite their strength and adaptability, giant river otters are endangered, facing increasing pressure from habitat loss, pollution, and human disturbance.

They are just one example of the diversity of otters found around the world, from coastal hunters to river specialists, each playing a vital role in their ecosystems.

World Otter Day is a reminder of how much these animals have to teach us about cooperation, intelligence, and resilience, and how important it is to protect the waterways they call home.

Because even the most social and capable species depend on healthy ecosystems to survive.

🐢 Today, on World Turtle Day, we celebrate one of the most ancient and extraordinary turtle lineages on Earth: the alligator snapping turtles of the genus Macrochelys—both the Suwannee Alligator Snapping Turtle (Macrochelys suwanniensis) and the Western Alligator Snapping Turtle (Macrochelys temminckii).

With their spiked, algae-covered shells and heavily armoured bodies, these remarkable turtles look almost unchanged from another time. Often described as “living fossils”, their lineage stretches back millions of years, with fossil evidence showing that their distinctive form and powerful jaws have remained remarkably consistent since the Miocene.

These extraordinary turtles are just one example of the incredible diversity found among turtles and tortoises worldwide, a diversity we have had the privilege to explore in depth while preparing Handbook of the Reptiles of the World: Turtles and Crocodiles.

The work continues to move forward steadily, and the additional editorial and production time invested is helping us ensure the level of scientific accuracy, detail and visual quality that readers expect from a Lynx handbook. Pre-order customers will receive a new project update by email today, with additional news and a closer look at some of the material currently being prepared for the book.
Seeing the pages of this handbook continue to take shape reminds us exactly why turtles continue to fascinate scientists and nature lovers alike. Ancient, resilient, strange and beautiful, they are among the most extraordinary survivors on Earth.
Yet many species are now under serious threat from habitat loss, pollution, overexploitation and climate change. Slow to mature and long-lived, turtles are especially vulnerable to decline, making their conservation more urgent than ever.
World Turtle Day is a reminder not only of how remarkable these animals are, but also of how important it is that they continue to survive into the future.

Because even the oldest lineages on Earth still depend on us to protect them.
