We live in a time where everyone feels pressured to “find their identity” and then defend it like it is life or death.
And I get it. I really do. I really, really do.
The ego loves identity. It loves labels. Labels feel safe. They feel stable. They feel like protection. Psychologically, the ego creates identity to protect itself. It wants certainty. It wants belonging. It wants something solid to stand on.
But here is where it gets tricky…
When we cling too tightly to a label - whether it is political, sexual, religious, cultural, personality-based, whatever - we slowly start shrinking ourselves. We start performing the identity instead of evolving as a human being.
Choosing one identity can limit you.
Choosing five identities and stacking them like badges can still limit you.
Attachment is the issue. Not identity itself. Attachment.
We are complex. We are layered. We are allowed to hold two truths at the same time. We are allowed to grow out of what once defined us. We are allowed to change our minds.
When we over-label ourselves, we become easier to categorize. Easier to predict. Easier to market to. Easier to divide.
And words matter. They really matter. Words shape thought. Thought shapes action. Learning how to speak clearly, thoughtfully, authentically - that is power. Real power. And people can feel authenticity. They can feel when it is real and when it is performance.
Yes, we all want to feel seen. We all want to feel validated. That is human. But copying trends, repeating scripts, and attaching ourselves to boxes just because they feel safe can turn us into carbon copies.
And I am not saying do not be yourself.
Be yourself. Fully.
Just do not build a cage out of the word “self.”
You are allowed to evolve. You are allowed to grow. You are allowed to be bigger than the box.
P.S.
And another thing…
Like your own post.
Seriously. Like it. Heart it. React to it properly. If you meant it, stand by it. I genuinely do not understand people who will pour their thoughts out into the world and then act embarrassed to click the heart on their own
