THIS CHURCH HAS HAD NO ROOF FOR 269 YEARS, AND IT'S BEAUTIFUL! 😳

We walked into Carmo Archaeological Museum expecting a normal museum...

But WOW!! It's a Gothic church destroyed by the 1755 earthquake, and they NEVER rebuilt the roof!

And it immediately caught my eyes, massive stone pillars reaching into the blue sky, medieval tombs, and... a cat living there, named Carlota! 🐈 Did you spot it duribg your visit?

This is Convento da Ordem do Carmo, built in 1389. When the great earthquake + tsunami hit Lisbon, it collapsed. They left it as a reminder.

What to see inside:
👉 The open-air nave — no roof, just sky and clouds
👉 Royal tombs & stone sculptures from all over Portugal
👉 The resident cat, the cute guardian! 😍
👉 Museum with mummies, Aztec artifacts, Roman ruins

Everyone goes to the front ruins for photos, but the inside museum corridor also holds the hidden peaceful spot!

Fee is €7, but worth every cent for this surreal beauty.

WE STUMBLED ON REAL SWORD GUARDS IN THE MIDDLE OF LISBON! 😳⚔️

Walking towards the Carmo Archaeological Museum, we saw them — two guards with swords and white plumed helmets, in the middle of changing posts!

I can't believe my eyes!

It looks like the Household Cavalry of Buckingham Palace, but no — this is in Lisbon! And I am witnessing them in person! I cannot help but feel so excited!

They are the guards of Quartel do Carmo — Headquarters of Guarda Nacional Republicana (GNR) in Largo do Carmo.

And inside is the GNR Museum that costs only €1-2 to enter. This is also where the Carnation Revolution ended in 1974!

After the changing of the guards, I cannot help but approach the guard on duty and kindly ask if I can have a picture with him. And he kindly gave me a positive response. What a gentleman!

ONE OF THE MOST TILED HOUSE IN LISBON IS HIDING RIGHT HERE! 😳🇵🇹

We were at Largo do Carmo following Tram 28 tracks and thought this was a MUSEUM!

It's Casa do Ferreira das Tabuletas, Rua da Trindade, around 2 mins from Carmo Convent!

And it immediately caught my eyes the moment we arrived there, the ENTIRE facade is decorated with beautiful tiles!

Built in 1864 by Manuel Moreira Garcia on the ruins of Trindade Convent, tiles hand-painted designed by Luís Ferreira.

Look close:
👉 6 allegorical figures — Land, Water, Trade, Industry, Science, Agriculture
👉 Masonic all-seeing eye on top — owner had strong Masonic beliefs

Majority take photos of the yellow trams, but this 160-year-old tiled beauty, a bit hidden at the end of the street, will definitely catch your eyes, stop a bit and just admire its beauty! 😍

I THOUGHT THIS IS A CASTLE 😳

But it's NOT!

This striped building is RIGHT in the parking lot of Cristo Rei in Almada, everyone parks in front of it and thinks it's a hotel or something

It's actually the Edifício de Acolhimento do Santuário do Cristo Rei, the reception building of the Sanctuary!

Built in the 1990s and finished in 2007 to welcome pilgrims, those 2 pyramid towers are the entrance to shops, restaurant and retreat house.

That striped look? Ceramic tiles + marble waste + brick, made to be seen from Lisbon!

We came for Cristo Rei and was not expecting to see this! 😍 And best part: entry to this building is FREE.

EVERYONE PHOTOGRAPHS THE RUINED CHURCH, NOBODY NOTICES THIS IN FRONT! 😳

We were going into the Carmo Museum and this was RIGHT in the middle of Largo do Carmo! I noticed this the moment we went outside the Carmo nuseum!

This is Chafariz do Carmo,built in 1771 and designed by Portuguese architect Reinaldo Manuel dos Santos!

Why it's way more than a decoration:

The water spouts are carved as stylized dolphins with sea-monster motifs, look close!
It was built to distribute water from the famous Águas Livres Aqueduct, via an underground branch called Galeria do Loreto
In the 18th and 19th centuries, this was a vital public station where aguadeiros (water carriers) filled heavy wooden barrels to supply the whole neighborhood

Today it doesn't supply water anymore, it's preserved as a historic landmark, surrounded by jacaranda trees, cafe terraces, the roofless Igreja do Carmo and Carmo Barracks.

Most people pay 7€ for the Carmo Museum and walk right past this 253-year-old FREE monument!

We enjoyed this for 10 mins break and continue exploring the city 😊

WE FOUND DEVIL'S MOUTH 20 MINS FROM FROM THE CASCAIS CENTER AND IT'S FREE 😱

This is Boca do Inferno in Cascais, and it literally looks like a tsunami cracked the earth open!

We walked just 20 minutes from Cascais center and BOOM, this massive gorge opening straight to the Atlantic!

Why they call it "Devil's Mouth":
In winter, powerful swells send water sprays and columns surging several meters to DOZENS of meters high into the air when they crash against the limestone cliffs and chasm! It looks like a tsunami exploding from inside the rock!

What you're seeing now in summer is calm, but you can imagine the power in storm season.

What you get here for €0:
-The white chapel like on the cliff — iconic Cascais viewpoint
-The stone balcony right over the chasm
-The deep limestone gorge going straight down to the sea
-Atlantic wild and blue, no filter needed

Summer is safe and beautiful for photos. Winter is spectacular but stay WAY back, those sprays are real tsunami-like! Fence is there for a reason!

AFTER €29 OCEANARIUM, WE EXITED TO THIS FREE VIEW! 😍😱

After enjoying the Oceanarium, we exited and were welcomed with THIS view!

We were not expecting this huge plaza, this is Alameda dos Oceanos, part of Parque das Nações, the main boulevard built for Expo '98!

And NO ticket needed: it's 100% FREE 😱

What you get for €0 here:
✨ The famous twin towers São Gabriel & São Rafael
🌴 2km street art from 20+ countries lined with trees
🐋 The Oceanarium building itself, amazing from outside too
🌅 5km promenade along the Tagus River
🌉 Sunset spot with Vasco da Gama Bridge, longest bridge in Europe!

Most people pay €29 and leave after 2 hours. We stayed an hour more and just sitting, walking, enjoying the view.

This is indeed a great combination, paying 29€ to enjoy and immersed to the aquatic world and afterwards enjoy the comfort of this beautiful view for 0€ 😍

WE WALKED PAST THIS PALACE TOO!!
😭

I only took a picture with those guards and they are kind enough to let me have a picture with them! But we were not able to go inside the palace! What a pity! 😭

This is not just a pink building in Belém, this is Palácio de Belém, where the President of Portugal lives!

We thought it was closed. Actually:

Outside: €0, you can take photos with the guards, see the flag, the gardens. Guards are super kind, they let you pose.

Inside: €5, but ONLY on Saturdays and you must book online 24h before. We didn't know! We came on a weekday so we couldn't go in.

The museum next door is €2.50 and open every day except Monday.

We ate Pastéis de Belém 100m away and walked past the President's house twice without knowing. What a pity indeed!

If you go to Belém, don't make our mistake, book the Saturday tour!

WE WALKED PAST THIS MUSEUM IN LISBON 🇵🇹. AND WE REGRETTED IT 😭

We were walking around and saw this grand entrance with "MUSEU MILITAR" and thought "we don't like weapons and war, let's go."

Biggest mistake.

I checked later, this is not just guns. Inside is a palace with 26 rooms, baroque ceilings with battle paintings, azulejo tiles from floor to ceiling, and Vasco da Gama's real 2-meter sword.

The largest collection of bronze cannons in the WORLD is in the courtyard here.

And the ticket is only €3. €3!!! Less than a coffee in Baixa and you'll immersed youself with this collections!

We will go back just for this, one day.

15€ TO GO INSIDE. I SAID NO 😅

After admiring the Monument of Discoveries, we went here — the Belém Tower. It was magnificent.

Husband asked me if I want to go inside, but when he told me that the entrance fee is €15, I said no 😅

The outside facade already satisfied me 😍😍

Inside is 4 floors, narrow 93-step spiral stairs, King's Room, terrace with 25 de Abril Bridge and the river view.

Outside: FREE to see, €15 only if you go inside. 45 mins is enough.

For €15, the view from OUTSIDE is already 90% of the magic.

Would you still pay €15 for this?
