The other day I said I was going to start posting new things on The News site so was wondering what anybody thinks of Boris Johnson's remarks about women wearing the Niqab (as opposed to the Burkha which is an entirely different concept altogether).
He was talking about the full face covering by Muslim women, not the full length coat/dress. So, in these times of uncertainty, is it fair to insist that faces don't be covered in public? Or are we eroding civil liberties by not allowing people to chose exactly what they wear in public.
Going to the opposite extreme, would we think it unacceptable if, for instance you are shopping in Sainsbury's, Mercadona, etc, and a woman comes in wearing a see-through underwear set? Most men, of course wouldn't object at all but what about the women? Would it still be the person's right to wear exactly what she liked in public? We can debate public decency laws until the cows come home but, in principal, wouldn't this be two extremes of the same argument?
Also, are we now not allowed in the UK to have a personal opinion any more? If Mr Johnson equates the Niquab to looking like a letterbox, is he not entitled to voice his opinion?
I think Mr Johnson was making an effort at light hearted humour that has totally backfired on him so, are we becoming a nation without a sense of humour? Comedians have been using religion, colour, creed, mother-in-laws etc., etc. for years and the British have laughed their socks off in the past. Perhaps we are becoming a race of people that are far too serious and should not listen to every nit-picking news bullletin that is stirring up trouble that comes along. And the TV and News should stop making mountains out of molehills for a change. I'm not touting Boris for PM or anything like that but, seriously... all this fuss over one little, perhaps misguided, comment? Paalease!!!
