The town square of Denia filled with animal rights activists holding lifebuoys—not for people, but for bulls. The symbolic gesture marked a renewed protest against Els Bous a la Mar on Sunday July 6, a traditional bull-running event held annually in this Valencian coastal town. Organised by PACMA, Spain’s Animalist Party, together with local group Denia Animal Save, the demonstration drew dozens of protesters from across the country to denounce what they describe as a “cruel and unnecessary spectacle”.

The response from residents of Vall de Gallinera to the new door-to-door waste collection system has been nothing short of remarkable. Official figures for the first month of operation — from 8 May to 8 June — reveal that the community has successfully diverted 15,195 kg of non-recyclable waste from landfill. In recent years, the average monthly amount of residual waste collected in containers stood at around 18,635 kg. Thanks to the introduction of selective waste collection, the latest weigh-ins bring encouraging news: only 3,440 kg of residual, non-recyclable waste was collected — the fraction that ends up in landfill and has the greatest environmental impact. These figures have remained stable so far into the second month.

A controversial court-ordered demolition in Benidorm could ultimately pave the way for an even taller structure to take its place. According to documents accessed by Alicante Plaza, the city council has confirmed that once the Gemelos 28 towers are taken down, new construction on the same site remains a possibility—this time rising to an astonishing 58 floors.
The twin towers of Gemelos 28, situated in the Punta Llisera area, have faced a demolition order since a 2017 ruling by the Valencian High Court (TSJCV), following a 2012 Supreme Court decision. The reason: a violation of Spain’s Coastal Law, as six metres of the buildings occupy public maritime-terrestrial land. Yet seven years later, the structures are still standing, and over 300 homeowners continue to live in legal limbo.
