A Year in Granada
Wow. Arte was just four months old when we packed up the old Audi A5 sports coupe — while I was still stubbornly refusing to accept that we probably needed a more practical car — and headed off to Granada for six months.
What was only meant to be a six-month adventure in Granada ended up changing our lives a bit. During our stay we set up a yoga retreat, which we ended up running for three years. And now, all these years later, we actually live here — so in many ways our story with Granada never really ended.
On the way, we stopped to see our old university mates, Tom and Lucy, who were staying in the southwest of France with their son Hansel, who was almost exactly the same age as Arty. And this photo was taken there — two tiny humans, both about four months old, completely unaware that over a decade later they’d still know each other, and that all of us would still be close mates too.
What’s funny is how different the kids look now compared to this picture. Time changes people in all sorts of ways. But somehow the friendships — both between the adults and the kids — have stayed remarkably constant.
And although none of us see as much of each other as we probably should, somehow when we do meet up, none of that really matters. We just slip straight back into it, and it’s always great to be in each other’s company again.
There’s something quite lovely about that. Some things change completely, and some things quietly endure.
