Hércules CF (Based in the city of Alicante) started life in the third tier of Spanish football and quickly made it to LaLiga after back to back promotions in the mid 1930s!

It wouldn’t be until the seventies when the club became a regular fixture in the top flight, finishing at high of fifth in 1975, a year after promotion. A eight season run following this almost makes up half of the clubs twenty top flight seasons.

Since that run, they’ve only played four more campaigns in Primera, most revelry in 2010/11. They currently play in the third tier having even spent time in the fourth in the not too distant past. They’re also fifth in the all time Segunda División table with forty three seasons.

They play at José Rico Pérez (29,500).

Pontevedra CF, who are based in the Galician region of Spain made their Segunda debut in 1960, three years later they were promoted to LaLiga!

A five year run in the top flight peaked with a seventh placed finish in 1966. However, since relegation in 1970, they haven’t been back. In fact, since then, they’ve only played five seasons in the second tier, most recently in 2005.

Most their time has been spent going between the third and fourth tier while going on the odd Copa run!

They play at Pasarón (12,000).

Real Oviedo are a football club that have achieved great heights while also suffering the lowest of lows.

Back in the 1940s, they were a regular at the top of the Primera table, finishing as high as third. Even in the nineties they qualified for the UEFA Cup. In fact, by the turn of the millennium they had only played once outside the top two tiers of Spanish football.

However, it then all went wrong as financial issues meant the club were forced down to the fourth tier by 2003. If it wasn’t for an international crowd fund, the club would’ve ceased to exist. The club have since risen back and after ten seasons in Segunda, they won promotion to LaLiga last campaign, after twenty four years away!

They play at Carlos Tartiere (30,500).

Sporting de Gijón are a historic club within the Spanish pyramid, being one of only nine sides to have never played below the second tier of Spanish football.

The team has competed in an impressive forty two LaLiga seasons but never won the trophy, coming as high as second in 1979, as well as making two Copa finals in their history, but once again, they’ve not been able to bring home the trophy.

They’ve even competed in Europe on several occasions, but recently they’ve been stuck in a nine-year stint in Segunda while they’ve had to watch their Asturian rivals Real Oviedo win promotion last season.

They play at El Molinón, the oldest professional football ground in the whole of Spain (29,371).
