In an intriguing turn of events, Ibiza and its neighbouring isle, Formentera, have seen a rise in visitors despite a notable dip in arrivals from Italy. The first half of 2026 brought 1,413,470 tourists to the Balearics, marking a 1.79% increase compared to last year. Spaniards were the most numerous, with an impressive 7.11% hike in their numbers, while Brits increased by 1.18%, showing potential to be the top international tourists by year’s end. Meanwhile, Dutch visitor figures jumped by a spectacular 19.62%. The island experienced a 13.08% uptick in French tourists, balancing out the sharp decline (15.01%) in Italian arrivals. Meanwhile, the German market regressed slightly with a 10.02% decrease in tourists. Despite mixed figures, there’s good news financially, as tourist expenditure soared by 8.36%, resulting directly in 1.525 billion euros. However, with accommodation and travel costs reportedly on the rise, tourism officials remain cautiously optimistic, keeping a keen eye on peak months July and August.

A new neighbourhood platform in Ibiza Town is opposing the municipality’s plans to relocate Mercat Nou, the city’s well-known fresh market. Residents believe the new project is far too large-scale and fear that the market is mainly being used as a pretext to build a large underground car park.

The proposed new complex would consist of three underground levels, with space for around 300 parking spaces, alongside commercial areas. According to the neighbourhood platform, only around 4% of the planned area would actually be dedicated to the market.

The organisers of the ‘No to the relocation of Mercat Nou’ platform are therefore calling for the existing market to remain at its current location and be renovated there. They fear that the planned construction work, which could last more than three years, would cause significant noise and disruption in the neighbourhood.

The opposition is already gaining momentum. Residents have submitted 16 objections and launched a petition. If the municipality does not alter its plans, they say they may organise demonstrations.

According to the current plans, Ibiza Town’s new Mercat Nou is expected to open in 2030. The project will be developed through a concession and has an estimated investment of €31 million. At the same time, a public participation process is currently underway, allowing residents to submit proposals for the preliminary design.

The debate over the market adds to a wider discussion about Ibiza’s growth and further development. For local residents, the message is clear: modernise the existing market, but don’t build another mega-project in the neighbourhood.

Ibiza and Formentera Amazed by Historic Solar Eclipse

Thousands of people gathered on Ibiza and Formentera on Wednesday evening to watch a spectacular total solar eclipse. Visitors especially gathered along the west coast and at higher-altitude locations to witness the extraordinary natural phenomenon.

Sant Josep, Sant Antoni and Sant Joan were particularly busy. In Sant Joan, more than 500 people gathered at the s’Àguila rock. On Formentera, the eclipse was also watched from various locations.

The large influx of visitors caused additional traffic congestion. Several roads were temporarily closed or had restricted access. Emergency services ultimately recorded eight incidents, including an accident at Platges de Comte. No serious injuries were reported.

The solar eclipse also prompted special events and celebrations on both islands. For many residents and visitors, it was one of the most extraordinary moments of the summer.
