Built nearly 2,000 years ago during the height of the Roman Empire, the Arena of Nîmes was originally a massive Roman amphitheater designed for gladiator combat, beast hunts, and public spectacles in the city of Nîmes.
Around 24,000 spectators once gathered there to watch blood sports under the Mediterranean sun, making it one of the most powerful entertainment arenas of the ancient world. Unlike many Roman monuments, it survived through the centuries by becoming a fortress, medieval housing complex, and eventually a cultural venue.
Today, the same stone walls that once echoed with the screams of gladiators now host concerts and festivals.
And in May 2026, history met modern culture when Black Coffee Black Coffee performed a sold-out orchestral Afro-House show inside the arena on a 360-degree stage, becoming the first Afro-House artist to stage a full orchestral performance in the ancient amphitheater. Nearly 14,000 people attended the event, transforming a Roman gladiator arena into a futuristic symphonic electronic experience.
