NuNorthern Soul welcomes Sydney-based producer and DJ Perth Lewis — the recording alias of Luke Fugar — to the label with a digital reissue of his beautifully understated album, Moments In Time.

Originally self-released and quietly circulating among a few in-the-know corners of the Balearic underground, Moments In Time never quite reached the wider audience it deserved. NuNorthern Soul is proud to give it a new home, placing it firmly where it belongs — alongside music that celebrates warmth, emotion, and musical honesty.

Perth Lewis’ sound is driven by emotive tonality, dusty drum machines, and gently looping guitar hooks. Drawing influence from the bedroom producers of the ’70s and ’80s, Luke’s music embraces imperfection and feel over polish — a trait that gives Moments In Time its charm and depth.

Across his work, Perth Lewis effortlessly bridges downtempo introspection and subtle dancefloor energy, letting his wide-ranging taste shine through. His releases on Dream Chimney and Within Reason Records have already hinted at his talent — but here, in full album form, his musical world feels more complete.

Moments In Time marks the first of two releases from Perth Lewis on NuNorthern Soul — a fitting partnership between an artist with timeless sensibility and a label built around music that endures.

Benjamin James Smith's occasional Dedications To The Greats EPs are always well worth checking, not least to discover the imaginative ways he's covered classic cuts. Having previously worked his magic on songs by Mos Def, Outkast, Prefab Sprout, Soul II Soul and The Pharcyde, he's now joined forces with rising star Joe Harvey-Whyte (who provides brilliant pedal steel parts) on 'a cover of a cover' - a take on Billy Swan's interpretation of Elvis Presley's 'Don't Be Cruel'. The real killer is the A-side 'Mother Earth' version, a 14-minute, slowly unfurling delight in which effects-laden pedal steel, acoustic guitar, ambient electronics and Smith's hazy vocals rise above a languid Balearic groove. Elsewhere, flautist Tamar Osborne guests on the bluesy and hazy 'Earth Heart' version, while the 'Root Heart' version is a sunset-ready slab of Americana.

Smith’s Dedications to the Greats series has always been about reinterpretation through emotion rather than imitation, and this new volume stays true to that spirit. Originally inspired by Swan’s own reimagining of the Elvis Presley hit, Smith and Harvey-Whyte create what can best be described as a “cover of a cover”, but one that breathes with its own quiet magic. The result is a lush, spacious and beautifully weighted piece of music that captures the warmth of Americana while folding in Smith’s unmistakable Balearic sensibility.
