The RÚV board, in a meeting this afternoon, has decided that Iceland🇮🇸 will not compete at Eurovision Song Contest 2026.

During the last days the Icelandic broadcaster received a large number of demands for the withdrawal, including artists as Björk or Páll Óskar.

The decisition comes after the voting, last week, during the EBU meeting, where the new Eurovision Song Contest rules were approved by majority, allowing the Israeli participation at Eurovision Song Contest 2026.

Although initially some board members thought that the decisition must be done the Cultural Minister due to be a political position, finally he delegated in the board, being agree with that decisition.

Now is in the air that will happen with the songvakeppnin, the traditional selection for Eurovision Song Contest.

The German 🇩🇪 National selection for Eurovision Song Contest 2026 will be held on 28th February from 20:15 CET on Das Erste.

The exact details have not been announced yet but SWR has revealed that the search of the songs and the artists were done in several stages:

🔹️ Songwriting Camps: artists collaborated with internationally renowned songwriters and producers to develop songs for the Eurovision Song Contest

🔹️ Selection Process: A list of songs and artists was evaluated and judged by music industry experts, an international jury, and a public jury

After the consultation of NRK to EBU, it has confirmed that the participation fee for Eurovision Song Contest 2026 will not increase due to the withdrawal of several countries from the contest:

"The preliminary fees were communicated to interested member broadcasters in September. We can confirm that no broadcaster will pay more to participate in next year's competition as a result of the withdrawal of countries."

That fee is the amount that each country must pay to compete at Eurovision Song Contest. Usually is affected by the number of countries in competition but it looks like that EBU does an exception for 2026.
