Another violent attack in Gwinnett County Ga. And once again, it shows a growing trend the district still hasn’t fixed.

Just days ago at Snellville Middle, a girl was violently attacked after a male classmate took her phone.
She asked for it back.
He grabbed her, slammed her to the ground, threw her into desks, and kicked her in the head in front of an entire class.

This isn’t an isolated event.
It’s part of a pattern that teachers have been warning about for years.

A couple years ago, things were so bad that Gwinnett teachers literally walked out over the violence happening in schools. They weren’t protesting kids. They were protesting a discipline system that wasn’t protecting them or their students.

What was happening at the time?

• A student at Mountain View High was repeatedly stabbed in the face and head with a pencil and ended up in the hospital.
• Fights and weapons were increasing across multiple campuses.
• Teachers were getting hurt trying to break up altercations.
• Students involved in severe attacks were back in class almost immediately.

And when teachers begged the district to rethink the discipline model, the superintendent at that time publicly said restorative practices would stay in place.

But here’s the truth:

Restorative practices were never meant for violent physical assault.

Restorative works for:
• conflict
• disrespect
• emotional outbursts
• normal kid behavior
• repairing relationships

Restorative does NOT work for:
• throwing a student to the ground
• kicking a child in the head
• repeated stabbing
• injuries that require medical care
• trauma-level attacks

You cannot “restore” a violent assault.
You remove the threat.
You protect the victim.
You address the behavior with real accountability.
Only after safety is restored do you even talk about repair or growth.

Until the district accepts that restorative practices are not a one-size-fits-all solution — especially for violence — this trend will continue.

And students, teachers, and families will keep paying the price.

Teaching isn’t just a job.
It’s showing up every day for students who don’t even realize how much they need you yet.
