Hotel/B&B Malaga Hills receives second sustainability certificate: a big step for a small place
Cómpeta / Canillas de Albaida, June 2025 –
The small-scale eco-boutique hotel Málaga Hills Boutique & Wellness Eco-Hotel has received its second sustainability certification this month. After previously being awarded the Biosphere label, the hotel has now achieved the prestigious Green Key certificate – the world’s leading eco-label for tourism and hospitality.
“Honestly, it’s a bit too big for us”
“For a hotel of our size, Green Key is really a heavy-duty label,” says the owner.
“The standards are strict, the audits are intensive, and the process demands time, money and dedication. But we did it anyway – because we believe true sustainability goes beyond just having solar panels on the roof.”
More than idealism – it’s a necessity
The motivation isn’t just idealistic. Climate change is a daily reality here too – with June temperatures already over 40 degrees Celsius. “Our planet is clearly out of balance,” she says. “We all need to take responsibility – even as a small business.”
Eco-tourism is booming
At the same time, Málaga Hills sees the rise of eco-conscious travel. Guests increasingly seek destinations that respect nature, culture and the local community. “For us, this certificate is not only a contribution to a better world, but also economically relevant. It helps us attract mindful travellers.”
Aligned with Andalusia’s tourism vision
This approach aligns closely with the tourism strategy of the Junta de Andalucía, which aims to attract travellers who value the authentic quality of the region – its nature, culture, gastronomy and calm atmosphere. It marks a deliberate shift away from mass tourism.
A regional example
With this certification, Málaga Hills positions itself as a regional frontrunner in sustainable tourism. “We hope it inspires other businesses to follow suit,” says the owner. “Our children – and theirs – deserve a future where they too can enjoy this beautiful region.”
