Four weeks left in Madrid… here are some thoughts!
Madrid has everything you could want in a city.
Big enough to have lots going on, but not so massive it takes ages to get around.
Mountains on your doorstep, incredible parks right in the centre (Casa de Campo a firm favourite), and so many things to do.
There is a real sense of identity and community.
Feels like it’s rarer to have a day where there is NOT a fiesta/city event and it shows in how people engage with each other and get out enjoying being part of the place together.
I’ve met some amazing people - and especially thank you to those who were very patient with me while I learnt Spanish.
I think it’s 10/10 important to speak any country’s language you are not just visiting, plus it really is a fun language.
Even the imperfect subjunctive!
Madrid is a perfect middle point to visit all the other incredible places. My favourite is Sevilla.
But doing (part of) the Camino de Santiago was actually my highlight.
I loved getting involved with the Madrid Players and met some close friends that way.
Activities are such a good way to help meet people around common interests.
Sport is also great for this and the Madrid Móvil app has an abono for pools, tennis, gym, hiit, and much more that is good value.
Círculo de Bellas Artes has a membership where you can access their rooftop for free all year.
There is also a YEAR-LONG pass (abono anual) to museums/galleries - Prado, Reina Sofía and many more - for only 30 euros. One trip is normally 15 euros. So much like this!
