Menorca was one of the most awesome islands we visited with Danae!🌴⛵

It was the last remaining island of the Balearic archipelago to visit, to complete the whole tour.🙂
The atmosphere here is completely different than on its big adjacent brother island Mallorca (more relaxed). Having said that; some parts were extremely busy with cruisers, since we were there in July and August.☀️

On our circumnavigation of Menorca, we found true gems of anchorages, friendly locals, beautiful bays & beaches, new cruiser friends, meet-ups with old cruiser friends and a surprisingly green nature!🥰🍀

Sadly, Menorca was the last destination of call of our voyage into the Med. Laura flew back to the NL from here, while she was still allowed to fly in her last leg of pregnancy. Lars sailed Danae back to the NL from here with his Dad.😢✈️⛵🇳🇱

Back home however, a completely new adventure awaited us.👶🏻❤️

🍃🌳Throwback to beautiful Cabrera!🌳🍃

Cabrera is the largest island of the ‘Cabrera National Park’ archipelago, situated South of Mallorca. 🏝
The Park has numerous restrictions for passing ships and a visit is only possible with a pre-arranged permit 📄.

The stunning nature🌿, variety of wild life🐿🦜🐠🦎, the shelter of the large natural harbour and the sheer quietness make this place a haven of peace.

We’re glad we took the effort to visit Cabrera.

Danae's sailplan⛵

Genoa 2
This is the main engine of the boat. We had it newly made by 'Huisman Zeilen' back in NL. It is a genoa 2, 42m2, 125% and it is fixed on the furler. Made in 9.7 Oz Vectran Pro, which has a smoother surface than Dacron, making it easier to roll in and out. We drew a sketch of what we were looking for (in red on picture) and the sailmaker took it from there. It has got quite a high aspect, which makes it a good sail for upwind courses. A disadvantage of this is it is not meant to be sailed reefed. To compensate for that, we choose a genoa 2 size. This does mean we sail underpowered often.

Main sail
This is a fully battened, 28m2 sail. It has 4 reefs. It originally had 2 reefs, but we had an extra 1st reef made, some 30 cm above the boom and a 4th reef, for storm scenarios. Because it is fully battened, it is quite a deep curved sail, which is the reason we absolutely need the sheet traveler, running along the whole beam of the cockpit. If the halyard is tensioned quite strong, the deepest point in the camber is pretty far forward, which makes the boat very well balanced.

Spinaker:
100m2 symmetric downwind/broad reach beast. Also called 'The Mermaid'. Will do its job to 120° True wind.

Storm jib:
8m2 heavy cloth storm jib. It originates from a Contest 36. We sail it hooked on the inner forestay, we fitted partly for that purpose.

🐳🐟🌊MALLORCA🌊🐟🐳

Danae + crew circumnavigated Mallorca 1.5 times now🙈.
Sailing really short bits works out very well for the three (🥰) of us at the moment and the Balearic Islands have much to show for. We're definitely not getting bored yet!

Mallorca has a stunning nature with an extraordinary variety of Cala's (narrow bays) to anchor in⚓. As long as you pay good attention to weather forecasts 💨 and make sensible choices, there is so much to see! Especially the Tramontana mountain range is wild and unspoilt⛰️.

+ We have seen huge Sea Turtles🐢 just meters from the boat and a jumping Sword Fish (or similar fish with long pointy nose)😮.

There's also the mass-tourism part of things on the island, which we usually try to avoid. Especially now COVID destroyed a lot of tourism related companies, hotels and restaurants, often displayed by "SOS Turismo" signs, this makes for a very sad sighting...

We've seen Mallorca now and when weather permits, we'll be off to Menorca.🌅

As part of our Balearics trip, we visited the island Formentera. This place is totally laid back and has amazing beaches!😎

It breathes a completely different atmosphere than Ibiza. After one month of cruising Ibiza, this is a very nice change of surroundings (eventhough we love Ibiza).

Never have we seen water such bright turquoise! @ Formentera, Islas Baleares, Spain

Beautiful days of sailing along the Spanish Costa Blanca⛵☀️
Home of millions over-tanned North-European oldtimers! 👴🏾🧓🏾

After 1,5 week on Mar Menor, we sailed to the beautiful small island of Nueva Tabarca, where we had a lovely stay!🏴‍☠️

Following stops were Albir and Calpe.
We also visited Benidorm by bus, which we both found quite a weird city, with its super-high, thin and completely randomly placed apartment flats (sorry, no picture). 🚌 @ Costa Blanca, Spain

Little update!☀️⛵

After we made the decision to go to the Med, we had a fantastic sail from the Guadiana River to La Línea de la Concepción (Gibraltar Straits).

When after a week or so the strong Levante (Easterly wind) finally died, we slipped lines heading for Motril.
When sailing into the night, we could not believe the strength of the bright blue sparkling lights that surrounded Danae and the dolphins in our company, caused by Noctiluca Scintillans (Sea Sparkle). We have seen this many times before, but never so intense!

We visited Granada and the Alhambra palace complex and continued our journey East. What is also noteworthy, is the sighting of a Sea Turtle. Never knew they live in the Mediterranean Sea 🐢

Stops: Adra, Roquetas de Mar, Cabo Tiñoso nature reserve, Cartagena.

Next stop: Mar Menor. @ Cabo Tiñoso
