Road trip to Portugal prep
Part 3

We’ll cover a few things in this post.

- The car was serviced and checked to make sure it’s ready for a long trip. Don’t forget to check your tires including the spare one!
- Ordered the Crit’Air sticker because we’re driving through low emission zones. This was roughly £5 and is valid for the lifetime of the vehicle it’s ordered for.
- If you’re doing this for the first time, check online for what you need in your vehicle, like reflective vests, red warning triangles and such.
- We usually find someone to come water the plants at home, but since we have someone staying over, this is sorted.

I think that covers everything we need to do before the trip, other than getting all our things ready 😫, I hate doing that, especially the clothes.
We’re staying with family in 3 different places, so no need to book hotel of Airbnb for our stay.
And I will be posting along the way and will cover our spends with fuel and tolls. We’ve actually never calculated how much the trip costs us so let’s hope we’re not in for a shock!

Portugal Road Trip Part 1

The first things we booked for our trip were the train to France and the hotel in Bordeaux for both ways.

Booked the train back at the beginning of the year, we planned to go on a Saturday and return on a Sunday but ended up changing things and are going on a Thursday and returning on a Tuesday because it was so much cheaper. If I remember right, about £200 cheaper.

The train was £437, £96 of this was for the dogs! I think this is absolutely ridiculous, two tiny dogs that can’t even get out of the car.
I used £170 in Clubcard vouchers, that turned into £340 and only paid the dogs fee because we can’t use vouchers for that.

As for the hotel, we always stop for the night, we don’t see the point in driving non stop and then being exhausted for a few days. Bordeaux is roughly half way so that’s where we usually stay. Our first year we made the mistake of not booking hotel and then took us hours to find something available so now we always pre book. We need two rooms now because the kids are more grown up, and the total came to £255 for both ways including city tax.
