Growing Concerns About Drink Safety in a popular Area – Stay Aware

In Orihuela Costa, known for its bustling nightlife, international crowd and welcoming atmosphere. Many bars take pride in offering a safe and enjoyable experience. However, in recent weeks, multiple users across local social media groups have shared personal experiences of sudden blackouts, disorientation, or memory loss after consuming only one or two drinks.

Although the exact causes remain unclear, some speculate that these symptoms could be the result of drink spiking — a criminal act involving substances such as GHB or ketamine. Others have pointed to factors such as dehydration, large spirit measures, or heat-related exhaustion.

⚠️ No establishments are being accused, and this article does not attribute blame to any bar or its staff. These reports remain anonymous and unverified, but recurring enough to justify a public safety reminder.

Several commenters in local Facebook groups reported:
- Feeling unable to walk or think clearly after one drink
- Waking up with no memory of the evening
- Being followed or approached by strangers while in a vulnerable state

While these incidents remain isolated and anecdotal, they do raise valid questions about how individuals can better protect themselves during nights out.

👉 Safety tips for all nightlife areas:
- Never leave your drink unattended
- Stick with friends you trust
- If you feel unwell or notice something unusual, inform bar staff immediately
- Report suspicious activity to the police

This article is based on public discussions and testimonies and is not intended to damage any business or individual. We believe both visitors and locals deserve to enjoy the vibrant nightlife of Orihuela Costa — safely and responsibly.

Sexual Assault in Torrevieja Remains Unsolved – Public Help Needed to Identify Attacker

TORREVIEJA – On May 26th, 2025, a young woman was sexually assaulted in broad daylight while walking alone along Playa Césped (La Veleta beach). The case remains unsolved to this day – and the suspect is still out there.

The victim, who shared her account on TikTok, reported that she was listening to music with her earphones when a man suddenly grabbed her from behind, lifted her off the ground by her thighs, and attempted to kiss her against her will. She bravely managed to fight him off and chased him to get a photo and video, which clearly shows the attacker’s face.

He tried to grab her phone to delete the video, but fled the scene on an electric scooter after nearby witnesses heard her screams and came to help.

The man is described as:

Wearing black Nike sportswear

Black sunglasses and a bike helmet

Riding a black electric scooter

Despite the video evidence and thousands of shares on social media, he has not yet been identified.

Masked Intruder Resurfaces in Las Chismosis – Caught on Camera Once Again

A chillingly familiar figure is making headlines once again in Orihuela Costa—this time in the quiet neighbourhood of Las Chismosis. A masked prowler, caught on camera creeping around multiple properties between 2 and 4 AM, has residents on edge—and rightly so. Because this is not the first time this man has appeared under the cover of night.

The intruder’s clothing, posture, and tactics strongly resemble the same suspect we reported on in March, linked to a burglary wave that swept through La Zenia and Playa Flamenca earlier this year. Back then, over a dozen break-ins occurred within a few weeks, all marked by similar methods: masked entry, torchlight scanning, and quiet yet methodical trespassing. Surveillance cameras from March showed a man in identical attire, including a hoodie and face covering—now eerily mirrored in the latest footage from Las Chismosis.

Residents are calling for answers and action. One homeowner wrote:

“I’ve got footage of him creeping round several nights in a row. Same guy, same hour—what’s he looking for?”

Multiple cameras have picked up the man lurking near pools, entry gates, and patios, often retreating into shadows when sensing movement. His reappearance comes despite earlier warnings and public outcry over the lack of police presence and follow-up investigations into the spring burglary spree.

💬 “Same gang, same tactics—no arrests.” That’s the message many frustrated residents are repeating, as the suspect continues to roam free.

🚨 Time for Action?
In light of the resurfacing threat, Crime Watch Orihuela Costa is again urging all residents to:
• ✅ Install and regularly check security cameras
• ✅ Use motion-detection lights
• ✅ Keep doors and windows locked at night
• ✅ Share any suspicious activity immediately
• ✅ Demand increased police patrols and investigative follow-through

The community has done its part: footage shared, information posted, and patterns tracked. Now it’s time for authorities to act decisively before this masked intruder graduates from prowling to something more dangerous.

📢 Have you seen this man?
If you recognise anything about his clothing, walk, or behaviour, contact the Guardia Civil or Crime Watch Orihuela Costa immediately. Let’s make sure he doesn’t disappear into the night again—unchallenged.

Hugger Mugger Alert in Playa Flamenca: Bold Daylight Theft Caught on Camera

Playa Flamenca has once again become the scene of a brazen daytime robbery—this time with clear images of the suspects circulating among locals.

On Sunday, June 30th at approximately 12:10 p.m., a woman reportedly approached a man behind the Pen Oil shop and attempted a “hugger mugger” theft—a method where the thief distracts the victim with a sudden embrace to sn**ch valuables, often jewelry.

A witness who was driving past the scene described the moment she saw it unfold. Unable to stop safely or make a call, she observed how the woman quickly realized she was being watched and sprinted off, jumping into a waiting silver-grey car. The victim, believed to work nearby or have sought refuge in a local shop, disappeared from view.

In the hours that followed, community members began connecting the dots. Several residents came forward with similar encounters. One user described how an elderly couple had just been targeted that morning near Cabo Roig’s “Consume” supermarket, only for the attempted robbery to be thwarted by the elderly woman’s fierce reaction.

Eyewitnesses claim the same duo may be behind multiple incidents in recent days. According to accounts, two women have been approaching elderly individuals while a male accomplice waits nearby in a grey car—likely as a getaway driver.

Photos of the suspects are now circulating on social media and neighborhood groups, prompting locals to remain alert and report any sightings to the authorities. One image shows two women approaching the camera; another shows a third woman matching similar descriptions.

The recurring theme in these reports? The victims were often wearing visible gold jewelry—making them easy targets.

Local residents are urged to be vigilant, avoid wearing flashy valuables in public, and report any suspicious activity to the police immediately.

This recent wave of street thefts is a troubling reminder: even in broad daylight, with people around, opportunistic criminals are watching.

Revealed: Stabbing Victim in Playa Flamenca Was Key Witness in Murder Case — Attack Linked to Possible Mafia Retaliation

In a case that grows darker by the day, it has now been confirmed that the man stabbed on June 16th in Playa Flamenca is none other than Daniel Antony McMeekin, a 30-year-old Irishman with a long criminal history — and a man who was, crucially, about to testify in a high-profile murder investigation.

The stabbing occurred just after midnight on Calle Jalón, near the Rambla de Las Estacas. McMeekin was treated by police on the scene and transported to hospital, where he remains under police watch. He survived — but refused to name his attacker, despite reportedly knowing them personally.

What wasn’t public at the time of the incident was who he was. Now, that’s changed — and the motive behind the stabbing is starting to come into focus.

A Dangerous Witness

As first reported by The Leader Newspaper, McMeekin was scheduled to testify in the ongoing investigation into the murder of fellow Irish expat John George, who was killed under suspicious circumstances.

McMeekin had publicly admitted — in a slurred, emotional Facebook video posted in January — that he had withheld information about the case:

“I am guilty of not telling the family sooner… I am vulnerable… the truth will be told.”

That confession brought him unwanted attention from both sides: grief-stricken family members who demanded justice, and others who seemingly wanted him silenced.

According to multiple sources, the timing of the attack was no coincidence. McMeekin was expected to cooperate with investigators in the coming days — and the stabbing appears to be a deliberate attempt to prevent him from speaking out.

Organised Crime Involvement Suspected

While no official link has been confirmed, speculation is now mounting that organised criminal groups — possibly Irish gangland or mafia affiliates operating along Spain’s coastal underworld — may have orchestrated the attack.

The pattern is chilling:
• A vulnerable man with a long rap sheet
• A witness in a sensitive murder case
• A brutal, well-timed stabbing
• And complete silence from the victim

Locals, law enforcement, and journalists alike are now asking the same question:
Was this a message?

One law enforcement source, speaking off the record, said:

“The pieces fit. The timing, the silence, the pressure. Someone didn’t want him talking.”

A Man With Many Enemies

McMeekin was already notorious in Orihuela Costa. We previously reported on his suspected involvement in a burglary spree across the region — accusations that turned him into a known figure among residents. But his criminal history stretches far beyond Spain’s borders: in Northern Ireland, he served time for vicious assaults, and both he and his former partner were known for chronic alcohol and drug abuse.

Now, despite the gravity of this latest attack, McMeekin has refused to speak — a silence that could cost him his life.

A Coastal Crime Web Tightens

His stabbing is just the latest act of violence in a coastal region that’s increasingly earning a reputation for underworld activity. Just last month, a 21-year-old Irishman was shot in the head in nearby La Zenia, in what’s believed to be a gangland hit. Two other Irish nationals — possibly connected to the victim — were arrested shortly after.

If the trend continues, Orihuela Costa may find itself no longer just a tourist hotspot — but a frontline in a quiet criminal war.

The Question That Lingers

McMeekin may have survived the knife — for now. But the message behind the blade couldn’t be clearer:
“Stay quiet. Or next time, you won’t get back up.”

Armed Burglars Strike Again in Orihuela Costa – Residents Sound the Alarm

A terrifying break-in has shaken the community of Orihuela Costa once again, after a group of three masked intruders broke into a home while the residents were asleep inside.

According to eyewitness Sue Sibley, the incident occurred at around 10:15 PM on the night of June 22nd. One of the masked intruders was captured on multiple CCTV cameras wearing a head torch and face covering, and carrying a crowbar. The attackers moved swiftly and deliberately, communicating via walkie-talkies and using a white SEAT vehicle as their getaway car.

“They were three of them,” Sibley explained in a public statement, “and while one of them was inside our property, another was trying to break into our neighbor’s house. We were in bed when it happened. It’s terrifying.”

Footage shared online shows the masked suspect entering the home confidently, seemingly unfazed by cameras. In the dim glow of the surveillance system’s night vision, the outline of the torch on his head and the weapon in his hand are clearly visible.

A Pattern Emerges

Disturbingly, this may not have been an isolated incident. Resident David Macartney commented on the case, stating:

“Same guy who broke into mine in Lomas de Cabo Roig start of May.”

The implication is that the same crew may have been active across Orihuela Costa for months, using similar tactics and tools. If true, this suggests a level of organization beyond that of a random burglary. The use of walkie-talkies, coordinated entry, and targeted properties points to a planned, mobile unit — not opportunists.

Community on Edge

With the summer season in full swing and an influx of tourists arriving, this latest case adds to growing fears among residents over crime in the region. The timing of the break-in — just days after local authorities announced an expanded summer security plan involving drones, jet skis, and extra personnel — raises questions about the actual effectiveness of these measures on the ground.

So far, the police have been informed and are reportedly investigating, but no arrests have been made. Residents are now calling for increased street patrols, faster response times, and a public update from law enforcement on any progress.

Have You Seen Him?

Authorities and the victims are urging anyone who recognizes the man’s clothing, body language, or mannerisms to come forward. The suspect is described as:

Male

Wearing dark joggers and athletic shoes

White or light zip-up hoodie

Face covering

Head-mounted flashlight

He may be linked to a white SEAT vehicle seen near the scene.

Anyone with information is urged to report it to the Guardia Civil or the Policía Local immediately.

Orihuela Launches Enhanced Summer Security Operation for the Coast — Patrols by Land, Sea, and Air

In a decisive move to protect the growing number of residents and tourists along the coastline, the City of Orihuela has officially launched a wide-ranging summer security operation for Orihuela Costa. The new deployment includes patrols by land, sea, and air, with drones, jet skis, and a force of 56 local police and emergency officers tasked with maintaining order and rapid response capabilities.

The plan was unveiled on Tuesday during a formal presentation at Playa Flamenca, attended by Mayor Pepe Vegara alongside councillors Mónica Pastor (Public Safety), Víctor Valverde (Civil Protection and Emergencies), Manuel Mestre (Coastal Affairs), and Local Police Chief Rubén Selma.

A Multi-Layered Strategy for Peak Season

The enhanced operation aims to address the population surge during summer months, when Orihuela Costa’s population more than doubles. Councillor Mónica Pastor outlined the scope of the plan:
• 56 total personnel, including 51 Local Police agents, three officers, and two coastal coordinators.
• Aerial surveillance using drones, operated by two trained officers.
• Coastal patrols with two jet skis, three agents, and an officer dedicated to beach and maritime oversight.
• Land patrols ensuring increased presence across neighborhoods, commercial areas, and key traffic zones.

All teams will report under the direction of Rubén Selma, acting head of the Local Police.

Pastor emphasized that this effort reflects the administration’s “firm commitment to coastal safety,” and signaled the city’s intention to maintain these resources year-round—not just during the tourist season.

Emergency Services and Fire Prevention

Further bolstering the operation, Councillor Víctor Valverde announced the addition of a rapid response intervention vehicle, which will operate daily from 10:00 to 18:30. This unit will act autonomously and in coordination with other agencies, focusing in particular on:
• Quick response to emergencies, including fires.
• Special vigilance in forest areas to prevent negligent behavior and potential wildfires.
• Additional coverage for surrounding districts and Orihuela city center, with support from two more agents.

Valverde noted that this vehicle is critical in the “first minutes of an emergency,” especially when fire services may be delayed. He also praised the Civil Protection volunteers, who will reinforce the team during high-traffic days.

A Full-Spectrum Response to Summer Challenges

Coastal Affairs Councillor Manuel Mestre expressed satisfaction with the expanded deployment:

“This is a very necessary measure. With the population doubling in the summer, the demand for security, traffic control, and emergency response also increases significantly.”

Mayor Pepe Vegara echoed the message, stating:

“Once again, we are reinforcing police and civil protection services to ensure a high level of safety for all during the busiest months on our beaches.”

He stressed that the long-term objective is to establish a stable year-round police presence in Orihuela Costa and reiterated the city’s demand for additional Guardia Civil reinforcements from the national government. Discussions are also ongoing with the Valencian Generalitat to permanently station forest firefighters at the emergency center in Orihuela Costa.

“We want immediate response to any risk, especially wildfires,” the mayor said. “We hope they don’t occur, but we must be ready to fight them from the very first minute.”

In closing, Vegara thanked all officers and emergency personnel involved:

“They are the real heroes of this operation. Thanks to their dedication, residents and visitors can feel safe every day in Orihuela Costa.”

✅ CONFIRMED: Infamous ‘Backpack Burglar’ Arrested After Years of Terrorizing Orihuela Costa

It’s the news residents of Orihuela Costa have been waiting for: the notorious “Backpack Burglar” has finally been arrested.

The Guardia Civil officially confirmed to us that the suspect was detained during the early hours of Monday morning. In an official statement, the authorities acknowledged that the information shared with them by local residents — including images, videos, and detailed reports — played a critical role in facilitating the arrest. Investigators are now reviewing all related denuncias and submitted evidence to clarify the full extent of his crimes.

“Yes, the Backpack Burglar has been arrested during the early hours of Monday. Our unit is analyzing all the information received. We are continuing to analyze the submitted complaints and videos to clarify other robberies,” the Guardia Civil stated.

The man, whose bald head and signature backpack had become almost symbolic of the ongoing wave of burglaries in Orihuela Costa, is believed to be responsible for dozens of break-ins over the past three years. His method was as unique as it was invasive: using fishing rods or poles to retrieve valuables through windows, often while residents were still inside.

A Turning Point for Orihuela Costa

The arrest marks a significant victory for both local law enforcement and the community, especially those who have relentlessly documented, reported, and shared evidence in the face of perceived inaction.

To the Policía Local de Orihuela-Costa and the Guardia Civil: we extend a sincere thank you. Your work in recent days has not gone unnoticed. The visible commitment and coordination shown during the arrest operation have restored a measure of confidence in public safety — and justice.

Call to Action: Help Close the Case

As investigators now work to connect this suspect to the many unsolved burglary cases in the region, we urge any and all victims of similar crimes to come forward immediately if they have not yet filed a denuncia. Even if the incident occurred months or years ago, every official report helps to complete the case file and ensures the suspect is held accountable for the full scope of his actions.

You can file a complaint (denuncia) at any Guardia Civil post — including the station in Pilar, Torrevieja or the Emergency Centre in La Zenia. If you have relevant photos, video footage, or witness accounts, be sure to bring or submit them with your statement.

This arrest is not just the end of a long crime spree — it’s an opportunity for justice.

Let’s make sure it’s complete.

⚠️ BREAKING: Has the Backpack Burglar Finally Been Caught in Orihuela Costa? ⚠️

In the early hours of Monday morning, just before sunrise, a dramatic arrest unfolded in the Las Mimosas area of Orihuela Costa. At approximately 5:00 a.m., residents were awoken by loud shouting and the sounds of metal tearing. A well-known burglar was reportedly apprehended by six officers of the Policía Local de Orihuela-Costa.

According to eyewitnesses, the man — described as bald and carrying a recognizable backpack — was detained after significant property damage occurred in the backyard of a local home. A metal fence was reportedly torn down, as well as cables and rain gutters from neighboring houses. Several pieces of stolen jewelry and cables were seen spilling out of the suspect’s backpack during the arrest.

The scene, illuminated by streetlight, bore a striking resemblance to previous break-ins linked to the notorious "Backpack Burglar" — a man believed to be behind more than 30 reported burglaries across Orihuela Costa in recent years. Known for his method of fishing valuables through open windows using rods or improvised tools, he has remained at large despite numerous high-resolution surveillance images clearly capturing his face.

This potential breakthrough may be connected to recent developments. A local resident, who has chosen to remain anonymous, confirmed that they had shared a large quantity of gathered evidence with two officers from the Guardia Civil only a few days earlier. This included photos, videos, timestamps, and detailed documentation — a body of work carefully compiled over time in an effort to help bring the suspect to justice.

While the suspect’s identity has not yet been officially confirmed by law enforcement, the description, circumstances, and recovered items strongly suggest it may indeed be the man who has eluded capture for years.

Authorities have not yet released an official statement regarding the arrest.

**A Community’s Long-Awaited Breakthrough**

The frustration in Orihuela Costa has been building for years. Victims — primarily from the expat community — have consistently reported burglaries, only to be met with indifference or outright refusal to take formal complaints. Some victims have recounted being told by officers that if no item was stolen or if valuables were visible through windows, the situation didn’t qualify as a crime — an interpretation that stands in stark contrast to the Spanish Penal Code, which clearly criminalizes both attempted burglary and forced entry (see: Código Penal, Art. 236–241).

The incident this morning may signal a shift in how local authorities are choosing to act — or it may be an isolated response to public pressure. One thing is certain: locals are watching closely.

If this is indeed the Backpack Burglar, many in Orihuela Costa will breathe a long-overdue sigh of relief. And if not, the question remains — how much longer will the real perpetrator be allowed to operate in plain sight?

We will update this article with confirmation from the authorities as soon as it becomes available.

🔪 Another Violent Attack in Playa Flamenca: 30-Year-Old Irishman Stabbed in Broad Daylight

Just days after a brutal shooting shocked the community, Playa Flamenca has once again become the scene of violent crime. This time, a 30-year-old Irish national was stabbed on Saturday in broad daylight on Calle Jalón, near the intersection with Salvador Dalí – a busy area not far from the popular La Zenia Boulevard.

The victim, who reportedly has a long criminal record, was found bleeding and was treated on site by local police until emergency services arrived. According to official reports, the man knew his attacker but refused to identify them to police.

By Sunday morning, traces of blood were still visible near a set of abandoned electrical meters on the street – a haunting reminder of the prior day’s violence.

🩸 A Pattern of Violence Emerging in Orihuela Costa?

This stabbing is not an isolated incident. It comes on the heels of a recent shooting in the same area, where a 21-year-old Irishman was shot in the head and remains in critical condition in intensive care. In that case, two Irish suspects – aged 27 and 45 – were arrested by the Guardia Civil. One of them has been placed in pre-trial detention without bail, while the other was released with restrictions, pending investigation as an alleged accomplice.

The gun used in that shooting, along with ammunition and the victim’s mobile phone, was later recovered discarded in a nearby field.

Adding to the growing concerns, an attempted kidnapping was reported just days later, all within a short radius of Playa Flamenca – a coastal area known more for its retirees and tourism than gang violence.

🚨 Residents Demand Action

With yet another act of violence on their doorstep, residents are growing increasingly anxious and angry. Calls for increased police presence and surveillance have intensified, particularly from the expatriate and family communities who now feel unsafe in a place once considered peaceful.

Despite clear indicators of escalating street crime, including visible bloodstains, uncooperative victims, and a rising trend of Irish-on-Irish violence, no significant law enforcement response has yet been announced.

The question many are now asking:
How many more violent incidents need to occur before authorities take decisive action to restore order in Orihuela Costa?

Backpack Burglar Honoured with Key to the City of Orihuela for “Outstanding Contribution to Local Chaos”

Orihuela Costa, Spain – Satire

In a historic ceremony held at Orihuela’s town hall this morning, local legend and career kleptomaniac “Backpack Burglar” was awarded the Golden Key to the City by none other than the Mayor himself and senior members of the Guardia Civil.

The event was held in front of a stone-faced crowd of uniformed officers, symbolizing the Guardia’s unwavering commitment to… public indifference. With over 100 successful thefts from expats in a single week, the man — who is still technically “unknown” despite being photographed more than a Spanish beach in August — was praised for his “unmatched consistency, creativity, and stamina in the field of petty crime.”

“We believe in celebrating excellence,” the Mayor announced proudly. “And this gentleman has done what many only dream of: commit crimes nightly, in full view of CCTV cameras, and remain untouched by the law for over three years.”

The burglar, wearing his signature “Gran Prix” T-shirt and trusty black backpack, accepted the award with minimal emotion — likely confused by the sudden shift from being ignored to being honoured. Rumours that he used a fishing rod to retrieve the key from the Mayor’s desk have not been confirmed.

A spokesperson for the Guardia Civil commented:

“We don’t usually hand out awards to criminals, but this one’s basically a civil servant at this point. In fact, he’s been more active on night patrols than half our units.”

The key, reportedly made of solid gold and fashioned with the engraving “Para Servicios Ininterrumpidos de Robo – Gracias”, will allegedly allow him direct access to all windows, sliding doors, and expat handbags left within 1.5 metres of garden walls.

Community Reaction

Locals are… not thrilled.
“This is a slap in the face,” said a resident whose house was broken into three times. “I got a €200 fine for putting my recycling in the wrong bin. This guy robs half the coast and gets a trophy.”

Others were more sarcastic:

“At least now the Guardia Civil doesn’t have to pretend to be looking for him anymore. Saves fuel.”

Despite widespread outrage, the Mayor has hinted at future awards: “We’re thinking of a bronze key for the scooter thieves next. The guy from Cabo Roig already has 14 iPhones. That’s entrepreneurship.”
