🛴E-scooters in Mallorca 🌴 it may seem really attractive to buy a an electric scooter, because they're everywhere, right? And they seem so convenient for getting around 👏
However, they have some downsides and struggles to them that we want to inform you about:
🔹 Insurance
The most difficult part. Some insurances don't ask for the serial number of the vehicles, even though that is required for the insurance to be valid. Some insurances will drag you through the process and in the end not provide you with the required documentation.
On top of that, the insurance rules are changing. Until now, a civil liability insurance has been required, with €120.000 coverage. But from Janurary 2026, a third-party liability insurance will be required, with much higher coverage, like a car or motorcycle.
If you fail to provide the necessary insurance documentation, the police can fine you €600 and inmobilize your scooter. You will of course need a NIE to sign an insurance.
🔹Speed and proper driving
The maximum speed is 25 km/h. Some illegally make them drive faster than this. You also cannot drive on the sidewalks and pedestrian zones (like Plaza España - you have to get off and walk). You have to be on the road or the bike path, and be considerate to others. We've tried multiple times that people overtake on curves where someone could've easily been coming in the opposite direction.
🔹Protection
It's required to wear a reflective vest and a helmet. If you are not wearing this, you can receive a €90 fine. A plus is glasses. We once saw a teenager get something in his eyes and immediately stop - he almost hit a tree, and luckily we saw him stop in time, otherwise this can also provoke crashes. You also have to make sure your light is working for driving at night. The coast areas are especially dark at that time.
🔹Parking
Surely you can find parking everywhere, right? 🤔 Well, unfortunately not. The typical bike-stands for parking are not everywhere, especially not in Palma center. Which means you need to find another place, however, to make it secure you need a really good (and long) lock. If you do find a designated parking, they could be full, which could be problematic in for example shopping malls where its the only allowed spot. If the parking spot is in front of a restaurant, you may have to be a client in the restaurant in order to park there.
🛴 Yes, they are great. But make sure you know the rules and behave in the streets, and be prepared for a bit of an insurance hassle.
