UDP MEDIA TEAM RESPONSES TO HON. ALHAGIE BABOU CEESAY
The recent derogatory remarks made by Hon. Alhagie Babou Ceesay, NPP National Assembly Member for Sabach Sanjal, referring to peaceful Gambian protesters as "mice and cockroaches," are not only deeply offensive but also a glaring reflection of the NPP KERENG KAFFO leadership’s contempt for the very citizens they claim to serve. This is not an isolated incident but a manifestation of the NPP’s growing arrogance and disregard for the democratic rights of Gambians, particularly the youth.
The young people of The Gambia have every right to peacefully protest and demand accountability from their leaders, a right enshrined in our Constitution and upheld by democratic norms worldwide. To demean them with dehumanizing language is an insult not just to the protesters but to all Gambians who believe in justice, dignity, and the rule of law.
A mere half-hearted apology from Hon. Ceesay is insufficient. The UDP demands that President Adama Barrow and the NPP KERENG KAFFOO leadership publicly condemn this reprehensible statement and take disciplinary action against their member. Silence from the government will only confirm their endorsement of such divisive and disrespectful rhetoric.
This incident further exposes the NPP’s growing disconnect from the people and their increasing intolerance of dissent. Instead of addressing the legitimate concerns of Gambians, they resort to insults and intimidation, further inflaming tensions in an already polarized political climate.
The UDP stands in solidarity with the Gambian youth and all citizens exercising their constitutional rights. We remind the NPP that Gambians are not rodents or pests—they are the backbone of this nation, and their voices must be respected, not ridiculed. If the NPP truly believes in democracy, they must take immediate and concrete steps to rectify this disgraceful episode.
Enough is enough! Gambians deserve leaders who respect them, not those who insult them.
