Back in August we had our first cruise with Ambassador, on board Ambition. We decided to book an Inside cabin for this cruise as it was a 5 night cruise and we were keen to get out and about!

These are our top 5 funnels of the ships we’ve been on - ending with our favourite!

5. Windstar Star Seeker - we love that the funnel isn’t a traditional shape. It’s a little quirky and makes the W stand out!

4. Fred Olsen Borealis - with this one, we love that they’ve painted the whole funnel a bright, bold colour

3. Oceania Vista - this one feels classy and modern

2. Virgin Voyages Resilient Lady - another one that’s bold in colour and we live how it lights up at night

After spending 5 nights on board Borealis and experiencing our first Fred Olsen cruise, we wanted to share our thoughts on this cruise.

The Good

A big thing about cruising for us is the food and FO certainly didn’t disappoint! We were impressed by the amount of options available in both the main dining and the buffet. Every single meal we had was delicious and the portion sizes were big!

On this cruise we booked an Inside cabin, knowing we wouldn’t be spending much time inside. We were impressed with the size of the cabin. There’s plenty of space with lots of storage. Even the bathroom is a very good size! Overall we were pleased with this cabin.

We enjoyed a lot of the entertainment on this cruise and in particular, we enjoyed the band Stattus and the production shows. Both were full of energy and very entertaining.

Knowing how old the ship is, we didn’t know if it would feel dated but we were pleasantly surprised! There are a few bits that are a little dated but overall, the upgrades that the ship has had are great. There are some beautiful venues, such as the Serenity Tea Room and the Piano Bar which you could easily spend a lot of time in. One of us always gets lost but the layout was really good and easy to navigate.

A special mention has to be given to the crew on board. From the moment you step on board, everyone has a smile and a hello and all are very friendly. In particular, our waiters, cabin steward and the Maitre’d were incredible. The crew really are what makes Fred Olsen.

The Bad

There really isn’t anything negative to say about Borealis but there are a couple of things we did want to mention.

If you’re on the Freedom Package, you can’t have your mealtime drinks in Fresco if you’re eating there. We’re not sure why but it isn’t overly advertised which is probably more of the issue. Any drinks you have there must be purchased.

The only other thing we thought was that the outside dining area for the buffet didn’t seem to have enough staff. There only appeared to be one crew member trying to juggle all of the tables and he was working incredibly hard!

The Overall

We loved our cruise on Borealis. If we could change one thing, it would be to have another pool or hot tubs at the back of the ship by Fresco to really make good use of the space. Otherwise, everything else was fantastic! We had a great experience with FO and we’ll definitely be back!

Day 5 - Fred Olsen Borealis - At Sea

Yesterday was our last day on board and it was spent at sea. It was a beautiful sunny day so we were able to get out on deck which we couldn’t really do on our first sea day.

We started off with breakfast in The View before taking a walk around the top deck to burn some cruise calories! We then headed down to the Morning Light Pub to do the quiz. To say we did badly is an understatement!

Following this, we made the most of the lovely weather and walked around the deck for a little bit before going to the barbecue in Fresco. The food was delicious as we’ve come to expect and it was nice to have the weather to sit outside and eat.

After lunch, we watched one of the musicians play by the pool before watching one of the crew create an ice sculpture.

A bit later in the day, we treated ourselves to some desserts in the buffet along with a cup of tea before going back to our cabin to pack our cases.

It was soon time for dinner and we ate in the main dining room again. There were lots of lovely choices and the food was delicious again.

Our evening was spent watching the Martini Experience in the Ocean Bar, which was really good fun, before watching the production show, The Ships a Rockin’, in the Neptune Lounge. We ended our night in The Observatory watching Stattus before heading to bed.

Tomorrow we’ll be disembarking in Southampton

Day 4 - Fred Olsen Borealis - Santander

Our second port of call on this cruise was Santander. None of the excursions appealed to us so we decided to take a walk around the city. It’s a really easy place to walk around with a nice waterfront and views across to the hills opposite. We then made our way into the city where there are churches to see and lots of old buildings.

Before heading back, we stopped for a coffee and took a stroll back to the ship. We had a small lunch in Fresco, just having a slice of pizza. Although one slice is the equivalent of a quarter of a pizza! This was one of the best pizzas we’ve had. After this, we did some laps of the prom deck to try and burn off the pizza!

Sail away from port was earlier today at 4.30 so we got ourselves ready and headed back up to Fresco for the sail away party with Stattus. It was a really good atmosphere and they played some good music!

It was soon time for dinner and we ate in the main dining room again. There was another great menu and all of the food delicious as always.

After dinner, we had a quiet evening with a drink and watching Megan Rayner in the Neptune Lounge.

Tomorrow is our last day on board and will be a sea day back to Southampton

Day 3 - Fred Olsen Borealis - Getxo

We had our first port of call yesterday in Getxo, for Bilbao. We started our day with breakfast in The View before heading off into town. Fred Olsen put a bus on to take you into town but we chose to walk. It was around 2km each way.

Firstly, we walked along the promenade with the seafront one side and the town on the other. We then made our way over to the town side where we took the free funicular up to the top of town. There are some great views from up here.

As it was a Sunday, all of the shops were closed and only the cafes and bars were open. We strolled around the streets for quite a while before making our way back down. The steps and the path down are quite slippery so we took our time!

Back on the ship, we had a bite to eat in The View before having coffee and a cake in the Bookmark Cafe/Serenity Tea Room. The Serenity Tea Room is a beautiful place to sit and relax.

For dinner, we ate in the main dining room and again, there was a great offering and all of the food we had was delicious.

Our evening was spent having a drink at the lido pool before seeing the singer in the Observatory and the guitarist in the Ocean Bar. We then went out on deck to see the start of us sailing out of port as we didn’t leave until 11.30pm!

Day 2 - Fred Olsen Borealis - At Sea
Our second day on board Borealis was spent at sea. We started our morning with a leisurely breakfast in the main dining room. The food was great and service super speedy!

We had a busy day planned with lots going on around the ship. Firstly, we went to the theatre to watch a little bit of the port talk before heading to the auditorium to watch the cooking demonstration. The chicken lollipops from Colours & Tastes were being shown and we got to taste one too!

After this, we saw the Welcome to Borealis talk with Deputy Cruise Director Brendo before going up to The View for lunch.

The ship has been working its way down the Bay of Biscay today and the seas haven’t been overly kind to us! It’s been a bit rocky and pretty windy outside!

After lunch, we decided to go back to our cabin to relax a bit before getting ready for the Captains Welcome Party. This was held in the Neptune Lounge and there was a party for each dinner sitting. Drinks and canapés were offered and we toasted the Captain and his senior officers.

For dinner, we ate in Colours & Tastes and the food was fantastic! Every dish was delicious and we enjoyed it all! To start, we had the chicken lollipops and tomato bisque, followed by the filet mignon for us both. Desserts were the sticky toffee Alaska and the chocolate fondant. We would 100% recommend giving Colours & Tastes a try!

We ended our evening by listening to some live music in the Morning Light Pub before heading to bed.

Tomorrow is our first port of call, Getxo (for Bilbao)
