The path to Mike Hawthorn’s grave is quiet, softened by the rustle of leaves and the muted air of an English churchyard. When I reached his headstone, its simplicity struck me—a plain marker for a man who once lived in the thunder of engines and the glare of victory.

And yet, as I stood there, the silence was anything but empty. In my mind I could hear the shrill cry of a Ferrari V12, the kind Hawthorn once pushed to its limits at Reims and Monza. I could almost smell the mingling of hot oil, petrol, and rain-soaked tarmac—an aroma every racer of the 1950s knew too well. The grave may be still, but his story carries the noise of an era when men faced death with little more than a leather helmet and unflinching courage.

Hawthorn was Britain’s first Formula One World Champion, a title he earned from a dangerous sport. He celebrated life as he drove—fast, boldly, sometimes recklessly—laughing with friends, charming strangers, masking perhaps the knowledge that the odds were always stacked against him. That he died not in the chaos of a Grand Prix, but on an ordinary Hampshire road, is a cruel twist of fate.

Looking down at the simple stone, I realized its restraint feels right. His legend doesn’t need marble or grandeur. It lives in the echoes of roaring engines, in the memory of duels fought wheel to wheel, in the pages of racing history where his name still shines. The grave is quiet, but for those who pause there, the silence is filled with the ghostly chorus of speed, triumph, and loss.

Celebrating 50 years of Art Car Collection at
To date, 20 BMW Art cas have been created being the first a 3.0 CSL designed by Alexander Calder in 1975 and the latest being a M Hybrid V8 designed by Jukie Mehretu in 2024.
The other ones shown at the were: 3.0 CSLby Frank Stella which too (as the first one) entered to race al Le Mans and then driven by Ronnie Peterson and Gunnar Nilsson at Silverstone and Dijon; a 1977 BMW 320i Turbo designed by Roy Lichtenstein, which was the first of the Art cars to reach the chequered flag at Le Mans; BMW 635 CSI 1982 by Ernst Fuchs which was the first production car to receive an Art treatment; BMW 850 CSI by David Hockney; BMW M3 GT2 2010 by Jeff Koons which also entered Le Mans.

Celebrating 100 years of the Phantom at the last weekend!
Phantom, the very best of the best!
The Phantom of Love was a gift from Claren Gasque, financial director of UK division of American FW Woolworth retail company, who wanted to give his wife a car like nothing else on the road.
Also de Phantom II and Phantom III (V12) were there together with the Phantom IV (commissioned by Lord Marks, from Marks & Spencer)
