LANZAROTE NEWS HEADLINES FOR FRIDAY 21.08.26

Yet another boat with migrants on was rescued and taken to Lanzarote shores in the early hours of yesterday morning. 110 people were on the boat. It was the third boat to arrive in less than 24 hours. It has led to Mayor of Arrecife, Yonathan De Leon to ask the President of Spain Pedro Sanchez to send the migrants that arrive by boat back to Morocco.

The number of vacation homes in Lanzarote which are offered on digital platforms has decreased by almost 13% in one year, which equates to more than 1,000 homes. There were 7,809 tourist homes in July 2025 and the total in July 2026 was 6,806. The figures were gathered by the Institute of Statistics. In the Canary Islands as a whole, the drop is 15%.

LANZAROTE NEWS HEADLINES FOR THURSDAY 20.08.26

The Ministry of Social Rights, led by Pablo Bustinduy, has imposed a fine of one million euros on the car rental company Avis for engaging in abusive practices.
Globally, Avis is one of the giants in the vehicle rental sector with a worldwide fleet of more than 600,000 cars, In Lanzarote, Avis concentrates its key operations at the Airport. The company charged a fee of between 33.88 and 45 euros as admin costs to customers who had been fined for a traffic violation while they had one of their vehicles rented.

From the solar eclipse to the lunar eclispe. A week tomorrow, Friday the 28th will see a partial lunar eclipse in Lanzarote. It will be 77% coverage, so although in Lanzarote we will not see a blood red moon, we will still get to see the moon in a reddish orange colour. Unfortunately though, if you would like to see it at its peak time you will have to set your alarm as peak views will be just after 5 in the morning.
