🇪🇸 WHAT ARE THE FIESTAS DEL PILAR? | PILARES 2026 🎉

The Fiestas del Pilar are Zaragoza’s biggest annual celebrations, bringing the entire city together for days of music, culture, traditional performances, street entertainment and fun. This year’s festivities take place from October 10–18, 2026. 🎊

So, what can you expect during Pilares?

👉🏼 Concerts and live music - performances by Spanish and international artists across different venues throughout the city.

👉🏼 Traditional Aragonese culture - experience jota dancing, folk music, regional costumes and local traditions.

👉🏼 Street performances and parades - enjoy the opening parade, theatre, cabezudos (big-headed figures), and other cultural shows.

👉🏼 Family activities and entertainment - activities for children, outdoor shows, fairs and attractions for all ages.

👉🏼 Food and social gatherings - discover food stalls, outdoor terraces and places to enjoy a meal or drinks with friends.

🎆 Fireworks and spectacular shows - several nights feature fireworks and pyrotechnic displays.

🌸 The famous Ofrenda de Flores - one of Zaragoza’s best-known traditions, when thousands of people dressed in traditional regional clothing carry flowers through the city centre. Although it has religious origins, it is also a major cultural spectacle and an important part of Zaragoza’s identity.

📍 Where does everything happen?

Many events take place around Plaza del Pilar, but concerts, performances and activities are spread across different squares, parks and venues throughout Zaragoza.

💡 A little tip: Some activities are free, while concerts, fairground attractions and certain events may require tickets. Check the official programme before heading out!

For many people, Pilares is more than a festival. It’s a chance to enjoy Zaragoza’s traditions, spend time with family and friends, and experience the city’s lively atmosphere.

🇪🇸 Wait… Imagine Naming Your Child “Sorrows.” 😳

It sounds strange in English, right?
But in Spain, names like Dolores, Soledad, Mercedes, Pilar, and Esperanza have been used for generations and are still very common today.

The surprising part? Their meanings aren’t what you’d expect.

• Dolores = Sorrows
• Soledad = Solitude
• Mercedes = Mercies
• Pilar = Pillar
• Esperanza = Hope
• Paz = Peace
• Luz = Light
• Consuelo = Comfort
• Gloria = Glory
• Rosario = Rosary
• Rocío = Morning Dew
• Caridad = Charity
• Amparo = Protection
• Paloma = Dove

So why would anyone choose these names?

It’s because they weren’t chosen for their literal English translations. Many became popular centuries ago because they were associated with important figures, virtues, traditions, and historical devotion in Spain. Over time, they simply became part of Spanish culture, and later, many of these names also became common in the Philippines because of our shared history.

I find it fascinating how a name can sound completely ordinary in one country but have such an unexpected meaning when translated.

🇪🇸 10 Spanish Words That Will Trick You Every Time

Learning Spanish is fun, until you realize some words look like English but have completely different meanings. These are called FALSE FRIENDS.

• Embarazada = Pregnant (not embarrassed)
• Éxito = Success (not exit)
• Ropa = Clothes (not rope)
• Librería = Bookstore (not library)
• Constipado = Having a cold (not constipated)
• Carpeta = Folder (not carpet)
• Asistir = To attend (not to assist)
• Realizar = To carry out or accomplish (not realize)
• Actualmente = Currently (not actually)
• Recordar = to remember (not record)

These are some of the easiest mistakes to make when you’re starting to learn Spanish, and trust me, I’ve made a few of them myself.
