West African Army Chiefs in Ghana over Niger Coup
----------------------
August 17, 2023(Afronews) - Military chiefs from the West African regional bloc, Ecowas, are meeting to discuss the deployment of a standby force for possible military intervention to restore democracy in Niger.

The gathering is taking place on Thursday and Friday in the Ghanaian capital, Accra.

At least 11 of the bloc's 15-member states back a military deployment to reinstate the democratically elected president, Mohamed Bazoum, after diplomatic efforts failed to yield any positive result.

But three Ecowas members currently under military rule themselves - Mali, Burkina Faso and Guinea - support the junta.

Niger's coup leaders have warned they will defend themselves against any intervention.

The discussions in Accra will focus on the resources, the number of troops needed, and a standard operating procedure for combat troops.

Ghana and Nigeria have led previous interventions under the umbrella of the Ecowas Ceasefire Monitory Group, Ecomog, in Liberia and Sierra Leone in the 1990s. The bloc has also intervened in other member countries and more recently in The Gambia.

The meeting comes amid a worsening security situation in Niger. On Tuesday, 17 soldiers were killed and 20 injured in an ambush by Islamist militants.

Kenya President Ruto Reinstates Fuel Subsidies in U-turn
--------------------------------
August 15, 2023(Afronews) - The government on Monday reinstated fuel subsidies in a major U-turn as it moved to cushion consumers from skyrocketing pump prices following the arrival of a cheaper consignment last week that had spooked oil marketers.

The Energy regulator kept the prices of fuel unchanged in the latest review cycle after reintroducing the subsidies that would have seen pump prices cross the Ksh200 ($1.39) mark.

“In order to cushion consumers from the spike in pump prices as a consequence of the increased landed costs, the government has opted to stabilize pump prices for the August-September pricing cycle,” the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (Epra) said in a statement.

Epra said the oil marketing companies will be compensated from the Petroleum Development Fund. According to Epra, without its intervention, the prices of petrol would have risen to Ksh202.01 ($1.41) a liter, diesel to Ksh183.26 ($1.27) a liter and kerosene would have increased to Ksh175.22 ($1.22) a liter in Nairobi.

But instead, the prices will remain unchanged at Ksh194.68 - $1.35 (petrol), Ksh179.67 - $1.25 (diesel) and Ksh169.48 - $1.18 (kerosene).

President Mohamed Bazoum, whose election in 2021 was a landmark in the country's troubled history, was toppled on July 26 by members of his presidential guard.

West Africa Bloc Seeks ways to Engage with Niger Junta
-------------------------------
August 14, 2023(afronews) - West Africa's regional bloc kept up its search on Sunday for diplomatic ways to overturn last month's coup in Niger, while retaining the threat of military intervention amid a crisis that has sucked in global superpowers.

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) said on Saturday that it aimed to send a parliamentary committee to meet the coup leaders, who have imprisoned Niger's President Mohamed Bazoum and dissolved the elected government, in the seventh coup in West and Central Africa in three years.

While the ECOWAS parliament made no firm decisions on Saturday, it set up a committee that plans to meet Nigerian President Bola Tinubu, who holds the bloc's revolving chairmanship, to get his permission to go to Niger, its spokesperson said.

The coup leaders, headed by General Abdourahamane Tchiani, have rebuffed prior diplomatic efforts by ECOWAS, the United States and others, raising the specter of further conflict in the impoverished Sahel region of West Africa, which is already dealing with a deadly Islamist insurgency.

With diplomacy faltering, ECOWAS has activated a standby military force they say will be deployed as a last resort if talks fail.
