It’s been more than ten years since the people of Haro Wancii were promised a road.
Ten years of dust in the dry season.
Ten years of mud so thick it swallows shoes and sways buses like boats.
Ten years of watching construction machines come like guests, dig up the earth, and vanish before the work is done.
And still, the road remains a wound—half-open, half-healed, and wholly neglected.
Yet just a few hundred kilometers away, the hum of bulldozers echoes across Addis Ababa’s growing outskirts. Corridor after corridor is paved, flyovers loop above intersections, and the capital wears its concrete crown proudly.
But in places like Mana Beenyaa, Adaabbaa, and Saxxammaa, people are not watching roads being built. They are watching their hope erode under potholes.
“If the city is a person in makeup, the countryside is a patient left untreated,” says a resident from West Arsi. “We don’t need lipstick. We need medicine.”
