Supreme Spiritual Council Condemns Political Pressure as Armenian PM Accuses Archbishop of Coup Attempt
A grave confrontation is unfolding in Armenia between the State and the Armenian Apostolic Church, following Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan’s dramatic accusation that Archbishop Bagrat Galstanyan, Archbishop of the Armenian Apostolic Church and leader of the growing “Tavush for the Homeland” movement, was at the center of a foiled coup attempt allegedly aimed at seizing power through violent means. The Armenian National Security Service claims to have thwarted the plot on June 25, 2025, marking a dramatic escalation in an already tense political climate.
According to the Prime Minister, the alleged plan involved a “sinister and large-scale conspiracy,” supported by individuals from what he termed a “criminal-oligarchic-clerical alliance.” Authorities released audio recordings said to contain violent threats and detailed efforts to acquire weapons. Pashinyan asserted that the movement, originally born out of peaceful protest against controversial territorial concessions, had now crossed the line into illegality and attempted insurrection.
Archbishop Bagrat Galstanyan, known for his eloquent defense of national sovereignty and moral leadership, has attracted significant grassroots support across Armenia and the diaspora. Many Armenians view him not only as a spiritual leader but also as a symbol of resistance to what they perceive as the government’s capitulation in matters of national security and identity.
In direct response to the unfolding events, the Supreme Spiritual Council of the Armenian Apostolic Church convened under the presidency of His Holiness Karekin II, Catholicos of All Armenians, and issued a bold and urgent statement. The Council expressed “deep concern” over the state’s heavy-handed actions and strongly condemned what it called the politically motivated targeting of clergy. Emphasizing that Archbishop Galstanyan remains a canonically recognized and respected member of the Church, the Council underscored that the use of criminal investigations to suppress religious voices was a dangerous violation of democratic norms and ecclesiastical independence.
“The arrest and interrogation of Archbishop Bagrat Galstanyan and those around him are being carried out in a manner that is not only unlawful but also deliberately provocative,” the statement read. “Such actions undermine public trust in state institutions and threaten the spiritual cohesion of the Armenian people.”
The Supreme Spiritual Council further warned of the growing rift between the faithful and the government, cautioning that the use of intimidation and propaganda against the Church could have long-term consequences for the spiritual and moral fabric of the nation. The Council called for respect, dialogue, and adherence to the constitutional principles that guarantee the Church’s integral role in Armenian society.
This crisis is being watched closely across the Orthodox world, where many see Armenia not only as the world’s first Christian nation but also as a bastion of traditional Christian witness in a volatile region. The situation has also raised concerns among ecumenical and human rights observers, who fear that the unfolding events may set a dangerous precedent for the treatment of religious institutions under populist or authoritarian governments.
At a time when Armenia faces growing external threats and internal division, the deepening conflict between Church and State underscores the urgent need for national unity, transparency, and a renewed respect for Armenia’s religious heritage and constitutional order.
