On this date in history, Svetlana Savitskaya became the first woman to walk in space on July 25, 1984.
The Soyuz T-12 mission, which docked at the Salyut 7 Space station, included the Soviet cosmonaut. She spent 3.5 hours in space testing tools as part of the operation.
Savitskaya was also the first woman to travel to space twice and the second woman to enter space overall.
