Ethiopia Highlights Landmark Environmental Initiatives at the Gaborone Biodiversity Summit

The inaugural Africa Biodiversity Summit, held from November 2 to 5, 2025, in Gaborone, Botswana, concluded with the adoption of the Gaborone Declaration on Biodiversity. The delegation from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Office of Permanent Representative of Ethiopia to the African Union and UNECA, highlighted the country's achievements in biodiversity conservation. Notable initiatives include the Ethiopian Green Legacy Initiative, rural watershed development projects, and the Addis Ababa Riverside Project, which integrates urban development with biodiversity conservation.
Additionally, Ethiopia's efforts in ecotourism were showcased as exemplary models that ensure communities benefit from biodiversity conservation.
On the sidelines of the summit, the African Wildlife Foundation launched the Africa Keystone Area Partnership Initiative, enlisting the Bale Mountains, Borana, and Gambela National Parks among 162 critical protected areas selected for conservation across 33 countries.
