The first round of technical negotiations between Somalia and Ethiopia within the scope of the Ankara Declaration adopted on 11 December 2024 took place today in Ankara hosted by H.E. Hakan Fidan, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Tรผrkiye, with the participation of delegations headed by H.E. Dr. Gedion Timothewos, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ethiopia, and H.E. Ali Mohamed Omar, State Minister for Foreign Affairs of Somalia.

By virtue of the Ankara Declaration, H.E. Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali and H.E. President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, with the facilitation of H.E. President Recep Tayyip ErdoฤŸan, had put forward a vision, ushering the way to a more prosperous and stable future.

During the first round of technical negotiations, both delegations demonstrated their commitment to the letter and spirit of the Ankara Declaration.

The delegations began the concrete work to transform this vision into reality and lay the ground for mutually beneficial sustainable development.

Both delegations appreciate Tรผrkiyeโ€™s continued commitment to prepare the ground for the next iteration of technical negotiations in March 2025.

Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr. Gedion Timothewos, met today with Minister of Foreign Affairs of Norway, Espen Barth Eide.

Dr. Gedion discussed with his Norwegian counterpart ways of further cooperating on climate change and green economy as well as the maintenance of peace and security in the Horn of Africa.

Ethiopia successfully hosted the 38th AU Assembly (Feb 15โ€“16, 2025).

Theme: "Justice for Africans and People of African Descent through Reparation."

๐Š๐ž๐ฒ ๐ƒ๐ข๐ฌ๐œ๐ฎ๐ฌ๐ฌ๐ข๐จ๐ง๐ฌ & ๐ƒ๐ž๐œ๐ข๐ฌ๐ข๐จ๐ง๐ฌ:

Progress on Agenda 2063 was deliberated at the PRC & Executive Council.

Topics included AU reforms, intra-continental trade, and development.

Elections were held for AU leadership positions:

H.E. Mahamoud Ali Youssouf Ahmed (Djibouti) elected as AU Commission Chair.

Ambassador Selma Malika Haddadi (Algeria) elected as Deputy Chair.

Ethiopia was elected to the AU Peace & Security Council (2025โ€“2028).

๐„๐ญ๐ก๐ข๐จ๐ฉ๐ข๐šโ€™๐ฌ ๐‘๐จ๐ฅ๐ž & ๐‚๐จ๐ง๐ญ๐ซ๐ข๐›๐ฎ๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง๐ฌ:

H.E. Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed emphasized:

Technology (AI, data sovereignty), domestic resource mobilization.

Climate change mitigation & agricultural productivity.

Hosted a Sudan humanitarian conference with pledges from UN, Djibouti, Kenya, & UAE. Ethiopia has contributed USD 15 million to humanitarian assistance operations in Sudan

The Ethiopian delegation was represented by H.E. Dr. Gedion Timothiwos at the Executive Council Session
