The USD/ETB rate continues to cool, now trading at 158.98 Br/USD (–0.66%), reflecting a second consecutive day below 160 Br. Supply remains robust at 158–160 Br, while demand clusters at 155–157 Br.

2. NBE Governor Mamo Mihretu Steps Down

On September 3, Mamo Mihretu resigned as Governor of the National Bank of Ethiopia, citing a desire to “pursue other passions and tackle new challenges.”

His departure follows two and a half years of sweeping reform—float of the birr, banking liberalization, launch of Ethiopia’s first securities exchange, tripling of FX reserves, and sharp declines in inflation.

Kenya’s KCB Group is setting its sights on Ethiopia.

The Nairobi-based lender, led by CEO Paul Russo, has confirmed plans to enter Ethiopia’s newly liberalized banking sector, one of Africa’s biggest untapped financial markets.

KCB is exploring acquisitions and weighing exemptions to Ethiopia’s 49% foreign ownership cap, banking on Kenya’s strong diplomatic ties and potential local partnerships to smooth the way.

This expansion comes as Ethiopian banks face growing pressure from Safaricom’s M-Pesa, which has driven rapid digital adoption since its 2023 launch.

KCB hopes to leverage its fintech strength, including its recent $15.5 million majority stake in Riverbank Solutions, to capture early ground.

The African Development Bank will contribute $500 million towards the financing of a new airport in Ethiopia, expected to be Africa’s largest when completed in 2029, the bank said on Monday.

State-owned Ethiopian Airlines has signed an agreement for the design of the four-runway airport near Bishoftu, about 45 km southeast of Addis Ababa.

The airline said it will provide 20% of the funding for the $10 billion project, with the remainder coming from creditors.

"The bank has itself earmarked up to $500 million, subject to board approval, to anchor the funding of this transformational regional integration project," the development bank said.

Last week, it said it was leading efforts to raise $7.8 billion for the airport, which will have the capacity to handle 100 million passengers annually.
