About Director Nolan’s Tenet
By Yetagesu Endale
Have you ever wanted to go into the future and alter the reality for the best? Well, a new sci-fi thriller film from legendary director Christopher Nolan attempts to do just that. The film is entitled TENET and takes you deep into the world of inversion unlike time travel to make the world a better place. Too technical? Tenet gives you all the answers. Use the word TENET itself to get a glimpse of inversion. Well, I won’t give any more spoilers. However, if you end up not understanding it, remember- as a single line goes in the film, ‘don’t try to understand it, feel it!’
Taking Tenet as the best film Chris has ever made is a total mockery of his career because every movie he has made is nothing less than ‘the best’. With Tenet he has only maintained his grip on the tools of great story telling, incredible cinematography, commendable visual effects, heart-pounding music and wonderful cast. Suffice to say, Tenet is another masterpiece on Christopher Nolan’s repertoire of films.
There are only a few directors in Hollywood who can’t make bad films one of which is definitely Christopher Nolan. Every time he picks up a camera, a lot of cinephiles including myself literally fidget to catch it as quickly as possible. Thankfully, he has never disappointed us. In fact, we always witness authenticity in his stories and ingenuity in the way he tells them. This time around we felt sorry about not catching TENET early as the film suffered a lot of delays because of Covid-19. This disease affected not just Tenet in particular, but it completely crippled our movie-going experience. To Chris’ detriment, Tenet has not been enjoyed a lot in cinemas as it should have been. He is not a fan of streaming either, but a traditional cinema guy who thinks movies don’t belong in the streaming world. However, given the inconveniences, a lot of people visited cinemas defying the fast-spreading disease.
Known for making great cinema time and time again, Chris once pointed out that whatever film you get your hands on, try to make it the best it could be. This attests to the self-investment he pours into his every project. His success cannot be ascribed to how much money he is allowed to spend on a project, but how much he gets invested in the story. In fact, he didn’t start making movies with big budgets and expensive gears at his disposal. He started small like most directors. His directorial debut, Following, was made with only $4000 and cheap gears. But, the film brought Chris forth and indicated what he would do should he have more resources. Then, he made Memento in 2001 with nearly $5 million. Based on a short story by his brother Jonathan Nolan, Memento was both critically and commercially successful. After years of observing what he is capable of, studios now succumb to whatever budgetary requests he comes up with.
Tenet is a whopping $200 million film- (this might not be accurate as there are a lot more costs including marketing and the like). This budget might have allowed Chris to communicate his vision as well as he intended. But, it is all about the story for him. Be it The Dark Knight trilogy, Inception, Interstellar or Dunkirk, we usually end up discussing the stories after leaving the cinema halls. As Nofilm school.com team put it Chris puts every penny on the screen. That’s what he did with Tenet. It is a great cinema told with cinematic fervor. Tenet digs into a complex idea that keeps viewers questioning what it is all about. The picture is aesthetically attractive and emotionally gripping. It embodies what Chris Nolan is known for- great story telling and extremely advanced (and of course dangerous) filmmaking.
John David Washington is the lead in the film. He gave one of the best performances of his career. In 2018, he was able to astound us all with his stellar rendition of Officer Ron Stallworth in director Spike Lee’s Blackkklansman. Collaborating with another great director this time, John is really unstoppable. His partner-in-crime is Robert Pattinson who has visibly given everything to his character. The villain is the veteran Kenneth Branagh. He is really something. Chris has indeed been able to extract wonderful performances from these and all the other actors in the picture. It is exciting to see them interact among one another.
The biggest complaint that many filmgoers and filmmakers alike have about Tenet is the sound mixing. The film is also accused of being too complex. Well, I didn’t complain at all. Instead, I tried to understand why Chris chose to do what he did. I didn’t understand it to be honest with you, I felt it!
Tenet is an utterly entertaining, beautiful and authentic cinema. Watch it, I mean FEEL it!

Marriage Story
Written and directed by Noah Baumbach, Marriage Story is a comedy-drama film about married couples, Charlie Barber (Adam Driver) and Nicole Barber (Scarlett Johansson), who go through a bad divorce. The couples, though they agree on a simple settlement at first, fall at the mercy of vulture lawyers who play 'who is the better lawyer?' kind of game instead of helping the couples out.
Marriage Story is sad and funny at the same time. It is rare to succeed in putting these two elements together. It feels very good to see mature subjects weirdly attuned to comical twists. Along with that, the film delves deep into human emotions and exhumes our motivation to do something and propensity to be short of it a little white later. It has a psychological and philosophical take on marriage in general. The story is set in Los Angeles and New York back and forth as the soon-to-be divorced couples fight for child custody. Primarily, it is not the daunting part of divorce that the film shows; rather it looks into why people fall intensely in love at first and come to develop terrible resentment towards each other. This film delivers a lot to feel than just to see. Noah has written a truly great script.
Marriage story is very deep and gripping thanks to the acting and the direction. Adam Driver gives the best performance of his career. He is incredible and maintains admirable chemistry with Scarlett Johansson. Both Adam and Scarlett are exciting to see together. Writer-director Noah Baumbach has drawn wonderful performances from these actors for this roller-coaster -ride like tale. Noah has also directed it in a beautiful and engaging manner. Showering us with how much the couples love each other at first, he manages to descend us to 'hope you die!' moment. Noah has approached it so well that it is relatable and resonant. Employing a docu style, he incorporates a realistic feel in it.
Masterfully told, Marriage Story is an enjoyable film that must be under the must-watch list of films in 2019.

Marty's The Irishman (I Heard You Paint Houses.) - a 'culmination'
Based on a book, I Heard You Paint Houses, by Charles Brandt, The Irishman is a crime film about an ordinary truck driver turned hitman named Frank Sheeran (Robert De Nero) who works for Russell Bufallo (Joe Pesci) - the head of a big crime family. Obedient to this crime lord, Frank eliminates everyone Mr. Buffallo deems a liability. Frank also works for another powerful man named Jimmy Hoffa ( Al Pacino) who has a strong contact with Mr. Buffallo.
The Irishman stars Robert De Nero, Al Pacino and Joe Pesci. (Wait a minute! I should’ve said these names out loud.) Mr. De Nero takes the lead playing Frank Sheeran who tells how his time with the mob fared and his dysfunctional family along with commentaries in retrospect. Who could have seen the collaboration of these veterans coming? Well, Marty could. Marty made countless movies where we witness nothing but the realization of cinematic art at its best. His earlier movies in which he usually collaborated with Robert De Nero are timeless. Yes, Marty is tough. But, he is also as versatile as a director gets. In fact, for Marty it is not so much about versatility as it is about drawing a great cinema. Directing a family movie (Hugo- a masterpiece), he wowed the audience, the critics and studio executives by how he approached the 3D technology. In Hugo, unlike many other directors, Marty used the 3D technology as a narrative instrument; he managed to make the 3D experience inseparable from the story.
The Irishman is not a movie that just happens. No! It is a combination of great writing, irresistible acting, beautiful cinematography and extraordinary directing. It is a three and a half-hour long movie. But, you barely notice the time because it gets you hooked from start to finish. In fact, I'm already starting to go again. (Surprized? why ain't you give it a shot?) The de-aging technology, employed to make the actors look younger, does not disappoint either. Penned by Steven Zaillian, an acclaimed screenwriter, the film is written incredibly well. It has a very good pace, funny dialogues, wit and smoothness that keeps the conversations flow naturally. Everything you hear subtly tells a thing or two about what could or could not happen next. Put in short, it is everything a great script should be.
Acting wise, what do you expect from these veterans! They are all Oscar worthy performances. I read that it took very long to lure Joe Pesci into the project. I now understand why! Working with Al Pacino for the first time, Martin Scorsese has managed to put the talents of these master actors in harmony. They are as magnetic in group as they are individually. Of course, Marty had already collaborated with Robert De Nero and Joe Pesci back in Goodfellas- another masterpiece. Marty knows what he wants and how these gentle men could deliver it for him. Winning the Oscars for only The Departed- another masterwork, Marty has been snubbed a lot of times. Can you imagine he didn't win the Oscars for the Goodfellas? I guess it's about time he took home the golden statue for the second time. With The Irishman, not only did he helm a true cinema, but he has once again proved to create a work of artistic transcendence in a career that spans over four decades. This 2019, although I eagerly waited for The Irishman to come out in hope of catching an authentic cinema, Quentin Tarantino, another master director, appeased my hunger with his immaculately made Once Upon A Time In Hollywood. For me, 2019 is one of those years I got to see and feel cinema itself. Back to Marty, I wonder what he could pick up after The Irishman. I heard he is getting ready to shoot another crime tale starring his other frequent collaborator- Leonardo Dicaprio and of course Robert De Nero. I can't wait to catch that already. A lot of critics have agreed that The Irishman is a 'culmination' of Scorsese's past works. I can't agree more!

Once upon a time in Hollywood- Yet Another Masterpiece
Written and directed by Quentin Tarantino, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood is a 2019 dark-comedy-drama film about a Hollywood actor named Rick Dalton (played by Leonardo Dicaprio) and his stunt double named Cliff Booth (played by Brad Pitt). The film recounts how Dalton tries to make it big in the film industry and also shows the deeply ingrained friendship between him and his stunt double.
Leo and Brad are more than exciting to see. Although never been together on the screen before, they both give riveting performance. Leo, playing an ambitious actor, leads very well. Similarly, Brad's performance is gripping. What a charming chemistry they exude!
A homage to classical Hollywood, Once upon a time in Hollywood is full of passion, reminiscence, pathos, filmic rapture and utter deviation. While the cast is amazing, and the production is flawless, a lot of time has to be taken to talk about the man who helmed it. One of the best directors of all time, Quentin never stays back from uncovering what Hollywood was like in the golden age- 1960s. His biggest strength has always been keeping the integrity of great filmmaking with an interesting storyline- be it true or fictional. His movies are immensely enjoyable. With Once upon a time, he only builds his streak of making wonderful motion pictures. In a time when not a lot of movies have such cinematic euphoria and relevance, Once Upon a Time won't just be watched and shelved.
Excellent script, dark comedy, extraordinary mis-en-scene and intense violence describe Quentin's films in a nut shell. Recently, I flipped through a review that tries to establish Quentin as a great writer rather than a great director. True, given his two Oscars for the writing category, one may be tempted to say that. However, every movie Quentin has made has a refined story with exquisite directing style. I definitely argue that it takes a great director to parlay a great script into cinema. Quentin is not otherwise. His career spans for more than two decades, and he has left both moviegoers and critics with nothing to speak ill of.
Quentin's love of cinema is present in his movies and speeches. He even flat-out said that he enjoys 'stealing' from the films that influence him most. Quite a movie buff, he indeed respects cinema. He once said, 'I did not go to film school; I went to films.' Certainly, in this competitive industry, nothing wins but passion. Quentin, a self-taught filmmaker, is a passionate and relentless director who knows exactly what and why he is shooting. If asked whether he is one of the best filmmakers of our time or of all time, I am pretty sure he would say, 'I try!'
Once Upon a Time in Hollywood is a must watch! I highly recommend.

Alpha- The Pack Leader
Set in the prehistoric times, Alpha is a 2018 epic adventure film about a young boy named Keda whose father tries to do what it takes to turn him into a pack leader. Although lectured on many occasions about leadership, the son fails to learn exactly as his father wants him to up until he unexpectedly finds himself in the wilderness. Throughout the film one comes to learn that a leader evolves from survival. It is those desperate times handled carefully and sufficiently that would finally unleash the leader in oneself. Wanting him to be the future tribal leader, the father in addition to his comrades takes his son and other young boys for what they call The Big Hunt on which their very survival depends. They travel day and night to do this. However, Keda, while hunting, falls off a cliff and nearly dies. The father, grieving hard, finally gives up and moves back to his tribe.
Keda wakes up only to find that his father is nowhere to be found. He realizes that he is now alone and starts feeding on his father's wise words about how hard it is to be a pack leader in order to survive. As they say, for the prodigy to be a leader, the mentor has to leave at some point. On one's journey to success, it is very likely to feel lonely and even uncared for especially when the very people you relied on leave out of the blue. But, as long as the journey is in place or as long as you remain stubborn to move forward, some unexpected people might appear out of nowhere. They could be people who you do not basically see eye to eye with or people who you have never even met before. Keda, the young boy, befriends a wolf who once comes to attack him with its pack. He forms a symbiotic relationship with this animal. They travel long and hard to make it back to their tribe.
Pain is on every step of a dreamer. A leader for certain knows there is pain, failure and all kinds of bitter experience on his way to greatness. He gets scared, uncertain and even skeptic at times. This is natural. But, a leader does what he has to do despite all the negativities and bad experiences he might run into. He sees hope in the face of bone-crunching failure. He falls, but he does not stay on the ground; nor does he go back lest he might fall again. He moves forward no matter what because that is what he knows. Alpha, in its entirety, is about dealing with unbearable pain to make it as a leader.
I found Alpha to be a principle-filled maneuver because it shows the tools a person needs to tread to his target. It is always very inspiring to see the evolution of an ordinary man into a hero. Of course, a little more intensity on Keda’s journey would have made it even more inspiring. But as it stands, I am very appreciative of the leadership ideas put into context visually along with inspiring dialogues.
Alpha, a wonderful, crowd-pleasing and inspiring entertainment, is highly recommended.
