One great lesson I learned while serving as a Chief Editor of the Journal of Science and Development, JSD, was that reviewing draft manuscripts for top journals in one's field has multiple advantages:
✍️ It helps one keep up with learning from top journals.
✍️ It brings firsthand knowledge before they are publicly communicated.
✍️ Most journals started recognizing review contributions.
✍️ It ensures improved quality of research methods and communications.
✍️ It is greatly fulfilling as this is the most valuable volunteerism.
✍️ Reviewers get free complimentary access to online records, which can be of greater help to researchers in the developing world as subscriptions to major journals are not often available.
That is why I keep doing it, devoting my weekends to reading for a greater cause.
