Simien Mountains National Park is one of Ethiopia’s most attractive tourist destinations, welcoming more than 32,400 visitors annually before the impacts of COVID-19 and the northern conflict.
However, during the past five years, the number of visitors has significantly declined due to instability. This decline has created serious challenges for local communities who depend on tourism for their livelihoods.
For example, in 2017 EC, only 4,092 visitors came to the park, a relatively increased number from 2016 EC (1951 visitors) but very low number compared to its true potential, again reflecting the impact of instability.
To avoid confusion, we want to clarify the tourist data from the last 10 years. The attached figures show the actual flow of tourists to Simien Mountains National Park.
Despite recent challenges, SMNP remains a world-class destination with unique wildlife and breathtaking landscapes. Visitors are still coming, but in much lower numbers than before due to safety issues.
