in Over the Last #10

Simien Mountains National Park is one of Ethiopia’s most attractive tourist destinations, welcoming more than 32,400 visitors annually before the impacts of COVID-19 and the northern conflict.

However, during the past five years, the number of visitors has significantly declined due to instability. This decline has created serious challenges for local communities who depend on tourism for their livelihoods.

For example, in 2017 EC, only 4,092 visitors came to the park, a relatively increased number from 2016 EC (1951 visitors) but very low number compared to its true potential, again reflecting the impact of instability.

To avoid confusion, we want to clarify the tourist data from the last 10 years. The attached figures show the actual flow of tourists to Simien Mountains National Park.

Despite recent challenges, SMNP remains a world-class destination with unique wildlife and breathtaking landscapes. Visitors are still coming, but in much lower numbers than before due to safety issues.

Fewer than 300 Walia Ibex individuals remain in the wild.

This research highlights the urgent threats facing Ethiopia’s iconic mountain species.
This iconic and ecologically unique wild goat (Capra walie) is found nowhere else on Earth. The rugged highlands of the Simien Mountains in Ethiopia are its only natural habitat.

In the newly published article, a continuing population decline as a result of poaching, habitat loss, and other causes has revealed.

Protecting the Walia Ibex isn't just about saving a species. It's about, Safeguarding afroalpine biodiversity, strengthening local livelihoods, and promoting sustainable tourism that benefits both people and nature.

Kick-off Meeting Launched for Simien Mountains National Park UNESCO Re-nomination

,July 21, 2025
Addis Ababa
A key kick-off meeting was held today at Jupiter Hotel in Addis Ababa to initiate the preparation of the UNESCO Nomination Dossier and establish a buffer zone for the re-inscription of Simien Mountains National Park as a World Heritage Site.

The meeting brought together stakeholders from government institutions, UNESCO, local authorities, conservation experts, and academia. Discussions focused on developing a roadmap for the nomination process, outlining legal and technical aspects of the buffer zone, and promoting strong multi-sectoral collaboration.

Mr. Kumera Wakjira, Director General of the Ethiopian Wildlife Conservation Authority (EWCA), delivered opening remarks and outlined strategic directions for the dossier preparation and buffer zone establishment.
Mr. Tilman Jaeger, KfW international consultant, also addressed his remarks by highlighting both opportunities and potential challenges ahead.

Simien Mountains National Park, inscribed as a World Heritage Site in 1978, is undergoing a renewed nomination to strengthen its Outstanding Universal Value and enhance its long-term conservation through clearly defined buffer zones.
