Dear Nuers – The Naath,
The Assassination of First Vice President Dr. Riek Machar Teny Dhurgon (1953–2025)
On March 29, former Kenyan President Raila Odinga visited South Sudan. However, he was denied a meeting with First Vice President Dr. Riek Machar and was instead told that he needed permission from Uganda’s President, Yoweri Museveni.
Today, on April 4, the African Union’s Panel of the Wise, currently in South Sudan, was also denied access to Dr. Machar. This time, the government claimed that he was under investigation.
These two incidents are not mere coincidences—they are calculated moves to cover up the truth. The pattern is clear: Dr. Riek Machar is no longer alive.
Connecting the Dots
The first denial of Odinga’s request was a deliberate stalling tactic by President Salva Kiir, allowing him time to manage the situation behind closed doors. The fact that Odinga was told to seek permission from Museveni suggests that Kiir was waiting for directives from the Ugandan president, who has long been a key player in South Sudan’s internal affairs.
It is no secret that Museveni played a role in the mysterious death of Dr. John Garang De Mabior. His involvement in South Sudanese politics has always been strategic—ensuring that leaders who challenge the status quo do not survive. Now, the same fate has befallen Dr. Machar.
Two days before the African Union panel attempted to meet Machar, Kiir held discussions with Museveni. The details of this meeting were never disclosed, but the outcome speaks for itself. Machar was already dead, and Museveni likely advised Kiir on how to handle the situation—by fabricating an excuse about an “ongoing investigation” to buy more time.
What Comes Next?
If history is any guide, Kiir might soon consider stepping down, claiming ill health or political fatigue. Why? Because his primary mission—eliminating Machar—has been accomplished.
