Subject: Condemnation of Disrespect and Misconduct Within the Gambella Regional Leadership
We, the concerned citizens of the Gambella Region, strongly condemn the recent actions taken by President Alemitu Omot, along with Regional Prosperity Party Head Ashine Austin, toward the duly elected Vice President of the Gambella Regional State, Dr. Gatluak Ruon Jal. Their conduct during the recent discussion forum, where Dr. Gatluak Ruon Jal was deliberately denied the opportunity to host or address the forum and was instead treated as an ordinary attendee, represents a clear disregard for the dignity of his office and the principles of collegial leadership.
Furthermore, the statement allegedly made by President Alemitu Omot that “education has nothing to do with the current leadership” is deeply troubling and contradicts the values of professionalism, competence, and respect that should guide public service. Such remarks undermine the importance of knowledge, meritocracy, and capable governance in the region.
We are equally concerned by the President’s reported dismissal of calls for accountability following the tragic attack on a public bus traveling from Lare to Gambella, in which three innocent lives were lost and eight others were wounded. The failure to take appropriate action against the perpetrators not only diminishes public trust in regional leadership but also sends a dangerous message regarding the safety and security of civilians.
Following the attack, students from Gambella High School rushed to the hospital to offer humanitarian support, identify the deceased, and stand in solidarity with the victims. Instead of acknowledging their compassion, the students were met with force. Reports indicate that the Gambella Special Forces were ordered to open fire on these unarmed students, resulting in three students sustaining injuries. Such use of excessive force against minors and peaceful civilians is unacceptable under any circumstance.
Given these developments, it is evident that President Alemitu Omot has demonstrated behavior inconsistent with the responsibilities, ethics, and leadership qualities required to guide the Gambella Regional State. Her actions have contributed to tension, disrespect within government institutions, and unrest among the public.
Therefore, it is our firm stance that President Alemitu Omot has shown herself unfit to lead the Gambella Region.
We call upon the federal authorities, regional elders, community leaders, and relevant institutions to urgently address these concerns, protect the rights and safety of citizens, and ensure leadership that upholds justice, accountability, and respect for all offices and communities within the region.
