A large genetic study has found that your blood type may slightly influence your risk of having a stroke at a younger age.

Researchers analyzing data from nearly 600,000 people discovered that individuals with blood type A have about a 16% higher risk of an ischemic stroke before age 60, while those with blood type O have a 12% lower risk.

Blood type B was linked to a modestly higher stroke risk at any age. Scientists believe this may be related to blood clotting factors, since type A blood is associated with higher levels of proteins that help blood clot.

Importantly, experts stress that this risk increase is small, and blood type is not something you can change. The real focus should remain on controllable factors like managing blood pressure, avoiding smoking, eating well, and staying active—especially as strokes among younger adults continue to rise.
