Was ’s closed “National Dialogue” truly a national dialogue—or another step towards national disintegration?
A process conducted around a predetermined agenda, while excluding or marginalising major political forces and communities, cannot manufacture national consensus. The triumphant mood surrounding its conclusion is therefore deeply troubling. What is being celebrated as an achievement may prove to be the final hammer-blow against the possibility of resolving Ethiopia’s deep-rooted conflicts through genuine, inclusive dialogue.
A Somali story tells of a poet and leader who repeatedly tried to reconcile two warring groups within his clan. His mediation failed, the fighting continued, and hundreds were killed. Arriving at the battlefield that afternoon, he prayed:
“O Allah, forgive me, for I tried to stop those who were destined to leave this world today.”
No one can save a country whose rulers close every peaceful path and leave force appearing to be the only remaining language.
What a tragic conclusion—and what a dangerous beginning.
