ZENA! – TEMESGEN: Tradition Through New Frequencies🇪🇹✨

London-based duo Yohannes Kebede and Menelik Mulugeta build on a long lineage of Ethiopian music in motion with TEMESGEN blending Ethiopian melodies with dub, jazz, R&B, and contemporary textures into something both nostalgic and new.

What began simply as two musicians playing together slowly became their first full record, shaped by experimentation and a deep connection to home.

Named after the Amharic word for “Thank God,” TEMESGEN reflects the overwhelming support the duo received since sharing their sound with the world. Like much of Ethiopian music before it, the album feels rooted in memory while reaching toward something entirely forward-looking.

We’ve chosen TEMESGEN as Zuret Addis Album of the Week and if you haven’t already, we highly recommend giving it a listen.

🇪🇹 The Emperor in Switzerland 🇨🇭
In 1954, Emperor Haile Selassie I visited Switzerland as part of his diplomatic engagements in Europe. His visit reflected Ethiopia’s growing presence on the international stage in the post-war period.

These moments capture a time where Ethiopia started actively building global relationships, with the Emperor representing the nation abroad bridging tradition and modern diplomacy.

The Douglas DC-3, the first ever aircraft operated by Ethiopian Airlines🇪🇹
Before taking on and dominating African skies, Ethiopian Airlines began its journey in the mid 1940s with the Douglas DC-3. In 1946, one of these aircraft carried out the airline’s very first international flight from Addis Ababa to Cairo, marking the beginning of Ethiopia’s connection to the world by air.

The first of this fleet, ET-T1, can still be found on the roundabout outside Bole Airport, while others rest quietly on the far side of the runway within the airport compound.

Ethiopian Orthodox Church Iconography ✝️ 🇪🇹

In Ethiopian iconography, the goal is not realism but meaning to make the spiritual world visible. From the placement of figures to the expressions and colors, every detail carries purpose, guiding the viewer beyond the image itself.
A timeless tradition where art, faith, and history meet.

Professor/ Maestro Ashenafi Kebede – The Shepherd Flutist Ethiopian Symphony (1968) 🇪🇹
Few figures in Ethiopian music history bridged tradition and scholarship quite like Ashenafi Kebede. Composer, conductor, ethnomusicologist, writer, and educator, Kebede played a major role in shaping modern Ethiopian musical thought.

Born in Addis Ababa in 1938, he founded the Yared School of Music, serving as its first director before continuing his studies abroad at the Eastman School of Music and later Wesleyan University, where he became one of the first Ethiopians to earn a PhD in ethnomusicology. In recognition of his work, he was named a National Composer by Emperor Haile Selassie I.

Released in 1968, The Shepherd Flutist Ethiopian Symphony reflects Kebede’s vision of bringing Ethiopian musical ideas into a symphonic setting. Recorded with the Hungarian State String Orchestra and featuring flutist Lóránt Kovács, the album blends Ethiopian melodic traditions with the structure of Western classical music.

The Shepherd Flutist, based on a popular Ethiopian theme, places the flute at the center of a lyrical and emotional composition. On the other side, Ethiopian Symphony unfolds across three movements inspired by Ethiopian national melodies from pizzicato passages reminiscent of krar sounds to a final movement influenced by the energetic rhythm of iskista dance.

Dedicated to the 75th birthday of Emperor Haile Selassie I, the record stands as one of the earliest examples of Ethiopian music entering the world of orchestral composition.

More than fifty years later, Ashenafi Kebede’s work remains a powerful reminder that Ethiopian music has long spoken in many forms from the village shepherd’s flute to the grand stage of the symphony orchestra.
