Gambella, September 21, 2025 (Meskerem 11, 2018 E.C.) –
The Regional Administrator, W/ro Alemitu Umud, emphasized the importance of strengthening stakeholder engagement in the ongoing efforts to improve the standards of educational institutions in the Gambella Region and ensure quality education.
She made this remark during the inauguration of a newly constructed secondary school expansion block in Nyinnyang town, Makuey Woreda, built at a cost of over 36 million birr, supported by the Livelihood Improvement Project in the Koloma areas.
The Administrator highlighted that creating a conducive learning environment is a key step toward ensuring educational quality. She stressed that enhancing the quality of schools and ensuring the required education standards demands the collaborative support and active participation of all stakeholders.
She expressed her appreciation to those who supported the Koloma area livelihood improvement project and called on other actors to continue and strengthen their contributions.
The regional government, for its part, stated that it is focusing on improving the standard of schools as part of its commitment to resolving challenges and ensuring the delivery of quality education.
The Regional Education Bureau Head, Ato Ukun Ukelo, confirmed that the Bureau is actively working to upgrade the standard of schools to address sector-specific problems and ensure that education delivered in the region meets quality benchmarks.
However, he also acknowledged that the educational challenges in the region are extensive and cannot be overcome by government efforts alone. He reiterated the necessity of collective action and stakeholder involvement to effectively solve these issues.
Similarly, Ato Uto Ukot, Head of the President’s Office and Coordinator of the Koloma Livelihood Project Steering Committee, stated that since the launch of the project in various parts of the region, significant efforts have been made to ensure the developmental inclusion of the regional population.
The project, currently being implemented in nine woredas, integrates activities across social and economic sectors, aimed at improving community livelihoods.
Dr. Biel Bichok, the Gambella Regional Project Coordinator, stated that the project is addressing community problems through development initiatives in education, health, road infrastructure, and livestock market centers, among others.
Today, a new secondary school expansion block was officially inaugurated in Windiyo, constructed at a cost of over 36 million birr. The facility consists of three blocks, housing four classrooms, a fully equipped school fence, a library, a laboratory, and a recreation center.
Ato Rial Jing, Chief Administrator of the Nuer Ethnic Zone, noted that the project is contributing to the development of schools, human and animal clinics, roads, livestock markets, veterinary health posts, milk processing facilities, and youth cooperatives through financial support and various other community-targeted activities.
Ato Mohammed Hussein, the manager of HB Construction, the contractor responsible for the project, confirmed that the construction was completed within three months, and that the total cost exceeded 36 million birr.
